Hello everyone. I used my new Stihl FS56 string trimmer today. When I bought it the unit had a fuel/oil mix in it from the dealer. I used that up today and had to open my first can of Motomix for the trimmer. I noticed something interesting. There was a difference between how the unit ran from what was in it to the Motomix. I know the oil that was in the trimmer was the Stihl oil but not sure about the gas. I noticed that with whatever was in the trimmer it would take a couple bulb pumps and two to three pulls to start the trimmer. It would idle somewhat smooth. With the Motomix the trimmer would start the very first pull but idle rougher and shake more. I thought that was interesting. Then I pulled the throttle trigger. What a difference. The trimmer would actually torque in my hands and twist. No so with whatever fuel was in it from the dealer. Like I said, this is my first ever trimmer and I am new to all of this. I just thought it was interesting to note. I am enjoying my new FS56 trimmer and the ease of use of the Motomix fuel/oil.

I tried one can of true fuel in my 12 year old Echo weed wacker, and it ran rougher and started harder than my own mix using Amsoil Saber oil.

The dealer could have used inferior gas, could be old gas, could have used too much oil in the mix and who knows what oil they actually used. I thought Stihl doubles the warranty if you use their oil?

They do. I bought a case of the Motomix with the new trimmer and that gave me a 4 year warranty over the two year. The tech who showed me how to use my new trimmer tried to sell me a 6 pack of the Sthil oil but I showed him where I bought the 6 pack of the fuel/oil premix. I just thought it was interesting to notice the difference.

The mix is often the big factor. Two strokes are critical on the mix. If you change the oil ratios you need to adjust the jets to suit as it really does make a big difference. I'd wager the dealer supplied fuel mix was just different to what you used. That and as you run it in the rings will seat better and you'll naturally get a whisker more oomph.

Personally I run 25:1 in all my garden tools and I just re-tune to suit. I've re-built enough two strokes over the years to see what a low oil mix can do so I always err on the side of smoke and a bit rich. Similarly my 100:1 Outboards get 50:1.

If that Stihl has an high and low speed adjustments to the carb, a tweak to those can totally transform these machines too.

I ordered a little $6 tool to adjust the carb on my cheap Husqvarna string trimmer. What a difference it made to this machine. Starts on the first/second pull every time. Super snappy throttle response and it will low idle all day long if you let it.

Depending on when it was built, the carb may only have a low speed and idle adjustment. A lot of them use a fixed high speed jet with no adjustment.

The dealer may have used pump gas with ethanol in it.

2 stroke engines really are sensitive to fuel with ethanol. They run noticeably differently with it.

My KTM 380EXC two stroke dirt bike is incredibly sensitive to gas with ethanol. My lawn equipment, not quite as much, but it's still clearly inferior to conventional gasoline.

Newer fuel lean efficient trimmers do run different from the older Shindaiwa for example.

What I notice is the newer fuel efficient engines takes some time to warm up before you get that instant WOT. Also there seem to be some break in period with the Shindaiwa where the WOT becomes more instant I suspect the leaner fuel. The newer Shindaiwa sips fuel vs the older it's very noticeable. This is very noticeable with the Shindaiwa T242.

As far as the different fuel you used I don't think the Motomix would had that much of difference as far fuel but more so design for fuel efficient leaner fuel.

Stihl may have the same similar break in period. Initially during the break in period I wasn't to fond of the Shindaiwa T242 wanted the old Shindaiwa back still do like the older ones but the newer ones do sip fuel +++. After break in the T242 do run better to my liking but there is short warm period before the trimmer runs at full throttle maybe the way it was designed because of the fuel savings. The T242 runs and works better when heated up from my observation. It's an excellent trimmer a great fuel saver and has good power to do most demanding commercial jobs.

For hard use I do like the Shindaiwa T282 seems to have little to no warm up issues, starts fast with torque also uses less fuel vs older.

Personally I do like the Shindaiwa T282 it's my go to trimmer for commercial usage.

Motomix is made by TruFuel to Stihl's specifications using Stihl's oil. I am a HUGE fan of TruFuel products (Echo powerfuel premix, Husqvarna pre-mix, Stihl Motomix, etc)and think it is a fantastic product.

If you don't use your trimmer all that much, stick with MotoMix or TruFuel (a few dollars cheaper) and your equipment will be running clean and perfect in 20 years.

That is what I am shooting for. I want this tool to last a good long time. I noticed via the manual that this trimmer has a break in period and I am not to run it wide open for a few tanks of fuel to make sure it breaks in right.

Most state WOT is fine as long as it's under load and most break in and do as written be it a saw in a cut or trimmer that has trimmer head on and cutting.

I use VPracing 4stroke mixed 40to1 with Mystic Sea&Snow use in all small two strokes including a Stihl saw runs like a raped ape clean exhaust and plugs 12 bucks a gallon in 5 gallon pail.

Yep my owners manual says the same. I read it wrong. I thought it said not to run it wide open at all. But it is for a no load situation. I am really happy with my new string trimmer. I hope it will last for a couple decades.
