My wife's Jeep Wrangler (6cyl) has ~73,000 miles on it. I would say half of those miles are severe duty miles (stop and go local traffic and short runs where the oil hasn't warmed sufficiently). I always change the oil @ 3 months regardless of miles. I noticed this year that the engine is making a light knocking noise at start up. Sounds like really light piston slap. The noise lasts for a few minutes and almost goes away once the engine is warmed up.
When I changed the oil last time, I decided to use 2 quarts of Maxlife and the rest Havoline dino. The knocking noise is hardly even noticeable at start up anymore.
I should also note that I check the oil levels in all my vehicles weekly. The jeep has never burned or used any oil nor have I had to add any between changes. Also, I use wix filters in the jeep and I never had a bad filter that I know of.
That in-line 6 is a great engine.
