Interesting maintenance program...

Fully agree on the unibody versus chasis theory, chasis is far better, especially in off road vehicles.

Really interesting that they don't touch the transmission after it had been reflashed at the police motorpool. Wonder what all the reflashing changes in order to get that type of trouble free miles out of a hard used transmission. Surely it isn't the 4R70W.

Actually, most police departments don't do ANYTHING to change or modify the transmissions. I'm not sure where they got the idea that the transmissions were modified because most likely they aren't.

Also, all late model Crown Vics use the 4R70W transmissions. The one in my 2000 CVPI with 143k miles on the clock is still strong and firm. Of course, I change the fluid & filter regularly.

I'm just amazed that they ignore air filters, fuel filters, and transmission fluid/filters. Particulaly since these items are cheap and easy to replace, it seems they would do them.

"The engine oil is then changed every 3000 miles or every two weeks. The Checker Werks facility averages around 700 oil changes per month."

Staggering amount of waste oil being generated.

This article is incredable,I spent 23 years working in fleet type work.4 years at an independent shop and 17 years at a dealer,These guys know what works and what does not . This is how they make a profit. They know that syn oil won't help if an engine overheats for example or what parts work and which don't .They are not bench racers. They are the real thing. About "waste oil" if recycled for feul or re refined what is the biggie about it?

"Checker Werks is likewise lax about changing fuel filters and air filters. For example, the Ford CVPI calls for a fuel filter change every 15K miles. The fuel and air filters are essentially ignored unless action is required."

I think I've read enough. It's like they're picking and choosing maintenance areas based on superstition.

At one time, highway patrol PD's had the low gear locked out. That used to be a factory option on the CV actually. I'm not sure if they still do. I don't know why. Maybe to make it easier to pull out from the grassy medians.

i love how they dont change the fuel filters untill they actually need it.
checker probably runs these things as cheap as they can to get the most profit out of them.

funny, you would figure running a synthetic oil would be more cost effective. i guess it isnt though.

That's my point MACiD - they just guess at everything. They never actually evaluated synthetic motor oil - just make some silly statement about the 3K recommendation! Stoopid really.

well how do we know they didnt give synthetic a test? or maybe they read that consumer reports aericle.

you should call checker hq and give them a few cases of amsoil to try in a dozen or so taxi's.
