Pennzoil Platinum (PP) is bad in wear tests I've seen.

The used oil analysis on Pennzoil Platinum oils show an additive package with very low levels of Phosphorous and Zinc (At or below 600 ppm).

It's easy to say that due to the GTL base oil, that it doesn't need a strong additive package, but that is an unproven assumption.

I made a similar trip in a 22 Colorado (V6) from NJ to South Dakota. I do 5k OCIs. I don't have a magnetic drain plug but now I'm thinking about it just for fun.

I think the Castrol EDGE Extended Performance is a very good oil.

Make sure you get one with a good high temp magnet on it.... especially if you go neodium

OP, why don't you try Pennzoil's best, the Ultra Platinum next? 3 jugs for $79 on Amazon. It says it offers extreme protection.

Call me crazy, but the PUP does not wear the dexos badge, and with a DI engine, I'd rather stick to an oil that does.

PUP and Quaker State Ultimate Protection Full Synthetic are GTL and they have more stout additive packages than PP. Quaker State Ultimate Protection Full Synthetic also has a more stout KV100 viscosity than Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.

Also Quaker State Ultimate Protection Full Synthetic costs less than PP and much less than PUP.

That said, anyone who wants to use PP may do so without objection from me. I'm not going to argue over what another person should do with their vehicle, but I will not be using PP. I also won't be using PUP because its anemic KV100 viscosity per grade is very uninspiring to me, especially for the high price.

Each person use whatever you want.

Given a choice between SOPUS products, I like Quaker State's High Mileage Full Synthetic 5w30 as it has a very generous additive package with high amounts of phosphorous/zinc anti wear additives, and calcium detergent additives.

True, and I like it too, but it's not GTL. Quaker State Ultimate Protection Full Synthetic is GTL and has a good additive package.

All Quaker State oils have good healthy viscosity per grade, which is another thing I like about Quaker State oils.

Right on. I have a Gold Plug for drainplug and a pair of Filtermag SS magnets wrapped around my oil filter. Those are strong neodynium magnets with effective operating temp range -40F to 300F.

I use a much longer than stock oil filter to increase filter capacity. For my Buick 3800 engine there is a fully compatible longer size filter available from many brands. I prefer NAPA Gold filters. My 2nd choice choice is Oreilly Microgard Select.

I know GTL oil has similar advantages to PAO oil (like flowing very fast in extreme cold weather, and also doesn't degrade in extreme heat).


But in terms of additive package (anti-wear, detergents), I prefer high doses of phosphorous/zinc and calcium regardless of whether an oil is GTL or just regular group III. That is why I like Quaker Statue / Super Tech - they have generous anti-wear and detergent additive packages.

I have a 2002 gm5.3 with 242k I never have anything on my magnet with any oil brand.
My other 5.3 2006 will be turning 250k this coming week, only time I had metal was using havoline in the box, oil fault or not I stay away from valvoline do to that. Years later different oils still no metal shavings

Could also mean that there is no or negligible cleaning going on too, whereas the previous oil was doing some cleaning. There's usually some wear metals caught up in the deposits.

Mobil 1/not cleaning (Oxymoron) isn't that what it is known for excelling at? With the partial exception of the ring pack, we now know any oil with the exception of ester based/novel specialty formulas oils can have a problem with.

This oil was discounted to $25 for 5 qt last week at Walmart. Along with all Edge oils - regular and EP.
So the Amazon price is good. I wouldn't call this oil pricy. It's priced very well.
