I don't know where people get that it takes 20 minutes for a car to warm up. Whenever I drive the 2013 VW Beetle TDI, it takes about 3, maybe 4 miles for the oil temperature to get over 200 degrees.
What do you consider short trips?

From what I have read, a "short trip" is anything under 15 minutes. Where people have arrived at that number, I don't know, but apparently the engine needs about 10 minutes of running when reaching operating temperature.

I'm not necessarily talking about this thread, but older threads many say it takes 20 minutes or so for the oil temperature to be at a normal temperature while the cooler temperature gets there pretty quick.

I'm not necessarily talking about this thread, but older threads many say it takes 20 minutes or so for the oil temperature to be at a normal temperature while the cooler temperature gets there pretty quick.
Reaching normal oil temperature isn't enough to cook off all the contaminants that you got with the car sitting (ambient humidity) and specially that it was created (dilution) during the warming up. I'd say anything below 30 minutes is short tripping.

Over here, during summer, it'll take 3-4 miles for the coolant temp to reach normal, but it'll take another 5-10 mins for oil temp to reach 200F or so. During winter, it takes significantly longer. That's based on our Q5 that can display oil temp. My 530i can't, and its coolant temp gauge is just a dummy gauge, like in most cars these days. It'll get to the 12 o'clock position as soon as coolant temp reaches 75C (167F), and that does only take a few miles during summer, but it'll take some more driving before it gets to around 200F, and I can only imagine oil temp will take even more driving before it catches up.
