Love my 2016 F150 4x4 Supercrew with the 2.7. Averaging 20 MPG in a full size truck that replaced a 2004 F150 4x4 Supercrew that delivered 14 MPG in the same driving cycle.
Your friend's Ram must have had an aftermarket exhaust installed because the stock exhaust on my Ram is almost silent. I do plan on changing that in the near future though.


I have always figured that to be the case. Our 14 RAM is super quiet until you wind it up, even then it is really muted.

FWIW, the other day I ran all my errands in her truck. 5.7/395hp, 8 speed auto, 3.91 gears. I averaged 19.5mpg on 87 octane. Seems pretty good to me, I've got a lot of trucks and none get that kind of mileage with me driving...

Nope - bone stock. Lots of downshifting with 4 guys, gear, and a boat. Fully loaded truck to boot, so sound deadening was not the issue. Annoying...

Like I said, when I test drive one, and riding in others, I found it to be pleasant in normal, day to day driving. When constantly loaded down it wasn't nearly as nice for hours on end...

Thanks for the clarification. I'm about half deaf anyway from too many years at the track so I can't hear as much as most do....

Also realized when I noticed it, I was sitting in the back seat... Was not as noticeable on the way up when I was riding shotgun, but was definitely there on the way back! Maybe more an issue that I was tired after the fishing and drinking in the week before...

Regardless, don't take it as a shot at the Ram. Good trucks - wish I had the 8 speed in my truck...

^^^No worries, I am used to RAM being vilified on this forum. Didn't bother me a bit when I was shopping. Still doesn't today with nearly 40k miles on our RAM already...

More poking indicates the 5.0 Coyote is 444lb, the older 4.6 500lb (cast iron) or 415 (aluminum).
The 2.7 gets the same block material (compacted graphite iron) as the 6.7 Powerstroke. Supposed to be quite strong. I've had five GM tow vehicles, 88 Astro, 99 Silverado 2wd, 2003, and 2005 GMC 1/2 ton, and a 2007 Envoy. The 2011 Ram was better in all respects, but I didn't care for the long second gear. Now I own a 2016 F150 Sport Supercab with 2.7 Ecoboost. Fuel economy on a daily 10 mile commute with mixed driving is 20.5 mpg. Highway driving in warm climate is 25 mpg at 65 mph. When it's hot out, I can get 26 mpg if there isn't a lot of wind. The only thing that irks me about this truck is that stupid stop/start feature. I can't share towing experience with this truck as I no longer own a boat. Not happy bout that!

A co-worker of mine recently bought a 2016 Ram 1500 crew cab 4x4, 5.7L, 8spd ex-rental. It's got about 14K miles on it. He's been averaging 19mpg with his work commute without even trying. He did say around town short trips are more like 15mpg. Still pretty decent IMO for a much less complicated drivetrain.

Sounds about right. We have an '07 Explorer with the 4.6 V8. When I use it in my driving cycle, I average 17-18 mpg. When its in my wifes hands and short tripped to death in City driving, it gets 14 or so.

That's the same specific output the two liter S2000 has. While Honda didn't use turbos to get there, they also gave up on torque, which the baby Ecoboost produces in spades.
Either Ford has seen the future and it ain't a pushrod V-8 or Chevy and Dodge (Ram?) have been right all along. So far it isn't looking all that good for the old-school approach.
The pushrod Chevs and Rams aren't slouches in any way
