Intel Nuc?

Yeah, I'm looking into it to use as a NAS and Plex/media server. However, when you factor in the additional cost of HDD/SSD and RAM, it's not really that cheap. The biggest pluses are small size and low power consumption.

Well, a motherboard plus i5 CPU will cost you close to $300. Then you have to add a case and a power supply, and that's already about the same as what the NUC costs.

Even if you were to put together a larger box at that price, you'll be hard pressed to assemble something with similar performance and similarly low power consumption to the NUC with the i5 CPU.

The only issue with the NUC is that you're forced to use the on-board graphics, which means no serious gaming. If you assemble your own box, you can fit a proper video card in there. Then again, the NUC isn't aimed at gamers.

right but thats a laptop 1.3ghz dual core i5
(IIRC)about 3500 cpumark
so I could build a mini itx i3-4130 and it would be 33% faster.(4800 cpumark)

you could also build a mini itx based Pentium G3240 Thats similar in speed to the i5 nuc for 120$+ case/psu

Edit:
Case with 200w power supply 58$
processor g3240 = 50$
motherboard 70$
(amazon pricing)

Nuc is a neat idea but you are paying extra for laptop parts in a small box
