The late 50s/early 60s super stock drag wars really started the cold air/ram air intake concept as well.

I sleeve my plastic intake runner in 4" metallic duct with a wrap of silver-backed fiberglass underneeth and I also use some specialty adhesive silver matte insulation on the engine side of my airbox. My MAF is completely shrouded too. It definately keeps the engine from getting that mid-day tired feeling from heat-soak.

Ram air ducts are mostly B.S. ducts. Taking the air intake from farther away from the hot surface of the roadway (and engine compartment)is better obviously.
I think ram air effect doesn't come into play until you're going WAY over typical freeway speeds. I'm talking 100+ MPH.
