I got a couple of new C-18's in so I thought I would take a few photos of the installation of a bypass system. Both of the engines are brand new Cat C-18's. They have the factory fill of Cat branded 10w30 Mobil oil. I will change it to what I use at a later date. I took an initial sample for trend and the warranty clock is started.

Bypass goes on everything in the fleet except pick-ups.

I know this install is cheating as their is plenty of room on the skid.

Two sample ports now.

It extends the life of the oil. Which, when you are dealing with as many gallons as this takes, is a good thing.

The question for me would be: Should I spend 750K per annum on oil changes when I can get the same results by spending a quarter of that?

I will monitor the current factory fill trough break-in and beyond depending on condition. Then it will get Delo 400 LE 15w40.

This is an open question to all and of course you yucca.....

When you start the new engine process of warranty and do a trend UOA sample....lets say Cat has a warranty that states the oil must be changed every 15K or equal hours. Can and will Cat and other OEM's accept a sample showing the oil is still servicable at 15K and keep the warranty intact even thought you will pass this 15K warranty point?

Well the L&M guidelines say's 250 hr's for these motors. Their are extended service allowances for using Cat's "SOS" program.

I hope to dial these two new C-18's into 4000 hour intervals. Like all the others in the fleet.

Their is reference to extended drain intervals and warranty in several Cat publications SEBU6251-08 is one I just looked at. Standard CYA.

No.

4000 X 60 = 244,000 miles....give or take a few grand for R.P.M. etc.

Explain your fullflow and bypass intervals and show us some of your long oil change UOA's!

First and foremost these two new motors will need to be monitored trough the break-in period. I will collect a ton of analysis data over the next few months. Oil changes will be preformed during this time as needed.

Does Cat ship with 10w30 for breakin only or is it the recommend viscosity now?

No disrespect, however...I would like to see some UOA's on oil over 100K and 200K still in service....you are pushing a bypass filter is doing this wonderful act, and I would like to see some realworld numbers...."First and Formost"!

Any chance you have that data on the other Cat engines that are pulling over 200K on the same oil yet? Even if you change the bypass at 500 hour intervals, your only adding 3 or 4 quarts per bybass change.....wondering......

I'm not a salesman. I assure you I am not pushing anything. I will leave that [censored] to the amsoils dudes. To me bypass is just a tool in my toolbox. I only have 120 bypass units in my fleet. It is pretty cheap to utilize the bypass system in the overall scheme of things. Brand of bypass does not mean a thing to me.

It does take a whole lot of UoA's to manage. Typically one of those C-18's will get >8000 hours per annum. So I will pull around 1500 UOA'a per annum for my total fleet. I have a ton of data.

Here is a UOA I posted awhile back. This C-18 has over 2,400,000 miles using your numbers or 40,000 hours using mine. The oil was changed at just under 200k using your numbers or about 3400 hours using mine.

Totally Amazing!

Most Cat Engines (non highway) are lucky to extend to 500hrs with the Cat SOS oil analysis program. It looks like they don't have a bypass system in place (like you do) So, congradulations on your program. And thanks for the data!
