install an engine oil cooler?

I have a 1970 Lincoln Mk III with a 460 cu.in. monster

I live down here in "hot" land (south Texas)
I'm going to start pulling a 4K lb trailer.
Engine is stock 5qt capacity and I run Delo 15w40.

Should I install an external engine oil cooler?
If so, can you recommend a certain type?

How frequently will you be towing, and how far? If it will only be occasionally used for towing and/or just towed a few miles, it may not be necessary. It certainly won't hurt though if installed properly.

I cant name specific brands, but make sure its thermostaticly controlled and have you considered a larger sump oil pan instead? I would think fuel dilution *could* be an issue with such a large carbureted engine and such a small sump depending on how it is tuned. and as for if you need the cooler, Well if done correctly it wont hurt IMHO.

I would start by looking into additional transmission cooling first. Unlikely you will need the engine oil cooler IMO but towing sure can heat up a transmission in a hurry.

x2 i would do the trans first....if you think oil temp is an issue a 20w50 may do better, i prefer synthetics but a top quality conventional will do....the ford c-6 auto is a tank!

Auxiliary transmission cooler, and a larger sump aluminum transmission pan, with a temp gauge.

A very large displacement low power density motor more than likely does not have oil temp issues anyway.

Do a trans cooler instead. That's where the heat is!

That's seems like very little sump capacity for a 7.5 litre.

maersk, yep, I agee. That was one of the pitfalls of the huge American iron of yesteryear.

And doesn't an external engine oil cooler add about 1.5 qts of oil?

Might be a good idea for me to do that just to give me more oil.

Me too. Get the transmission a supplemental cooler first.

back then almost everything had a capacity of 5 qts large V8s to inline 6's all got 5 quarts

Yup. My Jeep is a holdover from that. Takes exactly 5 quarts with filter, and that puts it just on the top edge of the full mark.

The 2.5 TDI inline 5 diesel from VW takes 8.9 litres (9.4 quarts). Then again, I've always thought the Germans, VW in particular, make [censored] engines fit for farm equipment, at best.

My 2.0 HDi takes 4.5 quarts.
