Initial experiences with PU 5w-40 euro

So I hit my 10k mi mark and drained out the Mobil 1 0w-40. It had ~3600 mi on the run. Engine still ran smooth but changed it out to officially start my 5k intervals. Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40 went in this weekend. I already noticed differences.

Engine still runs smooth, obviously...but the smoothness felt different. The Mobil 1 0w-40 felt like the engine was gliding over butter (imagine cutting butter with a knife). The Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40 felt like it was light as a feather, as if the engine isnt there (imagine cutting air with a knife).

HAHA. I agree, but this is the only "thing" I can go by, until I get around to a used oil analysis.

I'll only have about 4500 miles on the PU when 1 years will be up. Not sure if it even makes sense to do a used oil analysis at that point...

My last used oil analysis was on GC at 10K miles, but my driving habits have changed drastically since then, so it's not like it'd be apples-to-apples comparison anyway.

Nope. I'm kind of the same way... I've ran Mobil 1 5w30, Pennzoil Platinum 10w30, GC, Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40 in my 530i and honestly can't tell any difference.

I know that there are plenty of people who claim that their car likes a particular oil or that an oil runs great in their car. I've asked my car repeatedly if it likes the oil I'm using and never gotten a straight answer. Actually, I've never gotten any answer at all. More importantly, I've never sensed any oil related performance difference. I have done some used oil analysis and was convinced that the combination of oil choice and oci were working.

There was once I had Walmart change oil on my Taurus -- don't ask why but I did. Anyway, they put 10W40 in the crankcase and I didn't notice any difference until one day I saw the windows sticker, of course after that the car drove and idled a lot differently.

I think my car became an extension of my legs, hence why I actually feel a difference.

the only time i have ever noticed a real difference in oils was when i started running delo 15w40 in my nissan 2.0 "oil burner"
instead of sounding like a bag of pots rolling down stairs on start up it hummed like it was rotating in jelly. (temp was 25 deg F) gas mileage went down and so did 6000 rpm power but i never had to add any oil

I have a 4100 mile sample of P/U 5w40 sitting on my kitchen counter right now. I changed it out this last weekend because I started a new railroad career, so I will be traveling alot for the next few months as they try to wear me out to see if I am there for the long run. my plan was to run it 6k miles, but I decided to change it early since I had the time. I will try and get it to the post office sometime this week.

Update on driving experience:

Because of this light-as-a-feather feeling on the engine, I noticed that it revs faster and causes me to accelerate faster, forcing me to lighten my foot on the pedal.

Does anyone know the VI for Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40 euro? I don't see it listed on the pds. I feel like its much lower than Mobil 1 0w-40's 185, but higher than Pennzoil Ultra 5w30's 169 (both of which I have used). I'm thinking of mixing Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40's lower VI of 153 with Mobil 1 0w-40 to get somewhere in the middle (3x 0w-40 + 2x Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40). That should be a slight buttery feeling on the engine.

Any thoughts?

Usually, it takes me 3,000 miles into an oil change on some good 'ole 50 proof quality "stuff" before it feels like the OP describes. Insane acceleration gets unlocked, it's a free turbo-charger in a bottle or can!

VI index is a calculated value, based on the two viscosities (at 40C and at 100C). If you use the viscosities from PDS, its VI index is 180. If you use the two viscosities from a VOA, its VI index is 174.

Last time I changed my oil, I detected an initial raspberry note followed by smooth butter overtones and a dry finish.

Seriously, are we rating oil the same way people rate wine? Because I think both are largely hogwash.
