So I like Valvoline as a company more so than the rest of the big names anyway. And want some info on synpower. Anyone have pics from engines they have run it in or any info regarding it. After my truck does a short cycle in going to give it synthetic as well as the Saturn so maybe this will be it?

If I'm not mistaken, Valvoline may be more of a blender of oil than producer of base oils and additives, like M1. Also Valvo may use base oils from XM and others, but Overk1ll would know more about that.

Maybe Synpower will be the magic potion that will finally repair the rings in your Saturn.

Send them an email, they have always been very forthcoming with any of my info requests.

There is an interesting thread in the UOA section of a GM 4.3 V-6 with a number of different runs using M1, PP, and Synpower, all in 5w30, as well as one run of T6.
The Synpower proved to be every bit the equal of M1 in terms of residual TBN, viscosity retention and wear metals as measured in the samples (not necessarily the same thing as actual wear).
Problem is, Synpower has recently been more expensive than M1.
Would I argue that Synpower did as well as M1 in this engine on 7K drains?
Yes.
Would I argue that it's the better oil?
No.
Still, there are a number of other good Synpower UOAs in that forum, so if Synpower would float your boat, use it.
Why would you consider using Synpower or any other pricey oil in your oil-swilling Saturn, though?
If the pickup has low consumption, then try Synpower in it.

I've read where people said synthetic oil cleaned the rings and helped oil consumption. It would use oil and then get gradually better and better.

Chevy, you are like me...we don't listen...lol. You know your Saturn burns oil so why would you use a premium expensive (unnecessary) oil? Because we like to use "the best" products and we always think there is going to be a significant difference from one to another. After trying almost every top "Syn" out there I have come to the conclusion that they are all good. I seriously doubt Synpower is going to change consumption for you. I would use an HDEO 10w30 or 5w40 and use MMO at 20% and give it some time. At least 2-3 3-4k OCI's. I think if you try that experiment over the long haul you may get some positive results. Synpower or any of the expensive top tier oils are not going to change anything. Just keep plugging away with the best deal on conventional you can find or try the MMO (I'm tellin you, you may be pleasantly surprised).

Good luck

I wouldn't count on that.
The Saturn engine you have has a designed-in problem with its top compression rings.
They are located too high on the pistons.
No oil will free them, nor will anything else you can pour in, although Kreen might be your best shot at something that might work.
A teardown would free them, but only for a while.
This is a classic and known problem with the Saturn engine.
This is why Saturns are known as oil burners.
Oil is cheap. Replacing this car would be expensive.
Using synthetic oil in this engine would be a waste of money.

So I emailed Valvoline and asked if they thought synpower would be a good idea and they naturally said they recommended maxlife

As discussed before..... Put in the Amsoil 5w-40 EURO Formula!

Get ahold of Pablo!!

Amsoil 5w-40 EURO Formula FTW!

I think if the company doesn't sell gasoline, they don't make/refine oil.

the only solution is running a 15w40 diesel oil , that what do in my Saturn , and it reduced the oil consumption

^Well, maybe if he's going to stick with HDEO he should give it a good amount of time for the engine to adjust to consumption rates before it settles down.

W/e you run, ALWAYS keep it topped off as much as possible. Check the oil once every 100 miles and keep it topped off.

I've got my recommendations, if you use any WM stocked oil use Ultra > SynPower, just my opinion.

That said, if using an HDEO, at least get it synthetic. Rotella T6 5w-40 is so cheap relatively. 1 gallon for less than 1 gallon of synthetic PCMO at WM these days. That or M1 TDT...

They make a fully syn Maxlife, but I don't think you'll find it at Walmart, I really don't think any oil is your magic bullet in this case.
