The DSG transmission in a VW GTI is very sweet. I've driven a few CVT's, even some that were installed in powerful engine variants and did not like them at all.

Have you driven any of the HSD cars? These cars have "CVT" the behave very nicely compared to some of the others. At any rate, having become adjusted to the stepless way of doing things, I now find all "shifty" boxes to be incredibly primitive.

I have never driven a hybrid. I did drive a '97 Civic HX once which had a CVT transmission and belonged to a friend. the thing was very slow with high miles on the odometer and the CVT responded lethargic. In comparison, a '97 Civic with a regular automatic transmission felt more "powerful" when the transmission kicked down.
I wonder if with more miles, the CVT becomes more lethargic and has a hard time executing the needed power from an engine. Reliability is also a question.

Well, Nissan is not the only one. Mercedes-Benz has been using 7-speed automatic transmissions since 2004. And a Lexus LS460 has an 8-speed auto transmission.

It's very possible that wear may have an impact on those cone/belt CVTs. Nissan has another design they're using, and the Toyota design bears zero resemblance to the "traditional" CVTs. Toyota makes clever use of a design that's an idiot simple adaptation of the old planetary gearset. Very robust and simple. As for slow, the Prius is no rocket, but faster than the Civic hybrid. The Camry hybrid IS fast -- R&T puts it a 7.3 seconds for 0-60. That's quicker than the previous generation Camry V-6 (with the 3.0L engine). And actually it feels faster, as the torque from the motor-generators comes on instantly as you call for it.

What I really don't understand about the CVT's is why some of them (I believe at least the Altima) offer a mode where it simulates fixed gear ratios, as if it were shifting like a regular automatic. Why in the world would you want that in a CVT?

These are probably transitional pacification provisions to make those used to stepped transmissions more comfortable.
