I need to drill a few larger holes (5/16") in the concrete wall of my basement. My 14.4V cordless drill struggles, so I thought I'd pick up a basic corded hammerdrill for the job.

I've looked at this B&D one:

But I'm also considering this Bosch one, but not sure if it's worth the extra money:

Amazon says it's a single speed, but Bosch website seems to think otherwise:

Any thoughts? Recommendations?

I have an old skil, made in USA, which works well.

For cordless, Id go dewalt with the nano li-ion battery pack.

About 10 years back i burned up a B&D quantum hammer drill (Second time) and had to have another one to finish the job. Went down to a local pawn shop and picked up a Milwaukee one for $45 and have been very happy with it - paid $115 for the Black and Dorker. I even happened upon a case for it about a year later!

I think it's best to get a quality tool when ever you can. Look at the local pawn shops and check Craigslist; I bet you will find one.

Last time I wanted a 1/2 chuck,I could buy a brand new Chinese hammer drill for half the price.I only needed to drill 4 holes in concrete - I've had it 4 years and drilled many, many more holes.

Thanks all.

I found the Bosch one at Lowes. I'll give it a try. If I don't like it, I'll return it.

BTW, I just realized we have a tool-dedicated subforum here. Mods, please feel free to move this thread there.

Picked up the Bosch one and drilled 3 holes in concrete. So far so good. It didn't take long at all.

My only gripe is that the depth gauge is scaled in centimeters but not inches.

I just bought a Milwaukee 3/4 in. corded this morning off from Craig's List for $30.00. Works great.
