I'm not so sure this meddling and promoting democracy in other countries that the US does won't backfire. What if they democratically vote in someone who is even more opposed to us?
I just heard on the new that the U.S. had given Egypt 1.5 Billion in foreign aid a year. I guess for a while Murbarak was the best of bad choices?
I think its pretty great that the Egyptians are booting out a corrupt dictatorship/police state government, takes real guts to get out on street in a place like that. Hopefully they can elect some straight shooters to run the place.
My heart goes out to people there who was suffering for years under a suppressing government. Hopefully they are educated and honest that when democracy and stability comes, they wouldn't hand it over to another dictator that rip them off. It's sad to see stability goes the way of war and terror, regardless of democracy or dictatorship.
I hope for the best, but unless a truely democratic system can be established it is destined to fail.
In the wake of our financial problems here in the US I don't believe, I KNOW it is time to start pulling state welfare. If we are afraid of losing use of the Suez Canal then we can take other steps to secure it. Being the premier military force in the world has its advantages.
Forcing something on someone like a govt is dangerous. Luckily Egypt is one of the most reasonable Arab countries and may be able to sort this out from within. Mubarik will be gone within the next month whether he wants to go or not. If they can quickly reorganize and hold free elections then there may be hope. One big change in these protests compared to ones in past years is the people are not burning US and Israeli flags. They just want equal opportunities for themselves and their children, they quit buying into the "its the Arabs vs. the West mentality" - quite a good sign. The developments over the next few weeks should be interesting to say the least.
Just wait until they start jacking around with ISRAEL again. That will straighten them right up. Happened in the 60's and they stopped after what... 7 days! Too bad this country; EGYPT doesnt have a democratic government and treat their citizens good. I was there, and no they didnt treat their citizens like the U.S.A. and CANADA do.
That country has a huge population of unemployed young people. That is the main thing fueling this unrest. There is no way Egypt can ever, as a society, give jobs to more than a small percentage of them. The present Egyptian government is rather oppressive, but even under a better government these people will never be happy campers.
Thomas Robert Malthus wrote about these things.
A friend of mine said it like this:
"Young guy, with no job = no money = no future = no girl, and there you are."
I dont honestly in my opinion, think that anyone really cares/cared about EGYPT so why all of the sudden all the hype? You choose the government you want; you get what YOU VOTED FOR.

Uh, actually, we got the government ACORN voted for, over and over again with dead people, imaginary people, illegals, and even cartoon characters (Micky, Minnie, and Donald Duck voted).

Unortunately Israel is very much the problem with a lot of this. An ally IMO they are not. We can think we are creating destiny by having them there, but it is all man-made.
