Ive been contemplating how to go with a different air filter design on my 23HP Briggs twin. It has the flat panel filter with the foam precleaner and I just installed it before mowing this weekend. I put about 1.5hrs on the machine mowing and decided to check the filter. I tapped it out and got 2-3 tablespoons of dirt. The precleaner was clogged solid.
It would be nice if I could go to a good commercial radialseal type filter with a dust valve and throw a spinner onto the inlet to preclean the air as much as possible.

I looks like I would have to make a custom adapter onto the carb to go to like 2" pipe so I could attach it with a hose...
What say you?

I've thought of making a water bath prefilter for my car. Like an oil-bath filter, only..er..using water. Were fitted to early tractors.

Why would I bother with that when half the yard will be under several inches of water come fall when they start messing with the flow of the stream behind my house.

Im at the highest setting; wish I could mow higher.

We build a piece of equipment with a Honda GX630 and we pitch the factory filter and use a custom adapter to run a Donaldson filter with a precleaner. On our rentals the precleaner will be almost full and the filter will be almost clean.

I bought a cheap Fram panel air filter on clearance at walmart for $3.00 and built a simple wood frame (from scraps) that it's glued into.

The air has to go through it first before entering my chipper/shredder factory filter. Sawdust is easier to tap out than fine dust, but can you adapt *anything* to filter SOME before it gets into the factory airbox? Even a chinese "K&N" cotton gauze cone air filter would filter 90% out first.

Sounds like air filter is functioning normally to me. If you don't want to do maintenance pay someone to cut your grass. Panel filter is far superior to bubbler with water/oil.

Go away. I thought I was being pretty clear that I want to adapt something like this Donaldson

to the intake
I think I should be able to get more than 2hrs out of a filter.

Using another panel to preclean in front of the factory box is interesting idea, though I don't know how I could do that with where its pulling air from. Ill have to look at it some more.

Yes! Now if I had an adapter for a Briggs I would be set.

Looking at it, I don't think it would be too difficult. I could just lay a plate over the filter, drill holes for the mounting points, cut a hole for the inlet to the carb and weld on a pipe. The factory filter would be clamped below it, but would only be there to provide the seal.

It really shouldn't be all that hard to adapt a different filter and raise it up higher-just a little bit of engineering.

You could always plant a ground cover that doesn't get damaged by flooding, or put in a rain garden. Then you don't have to worry about jerry rigging anything on your mower. And to top it off you'll be doing the environment and ecosystem a big favor.
