SMALLER GARAGES!?! Why would anyone want that?

No kidding! Garages on new houses are already usually too small. You need a little extra room so you don't feel cramped while working on vehicles.

Vad: not sure how they can say that - there's waiting lists for Prius and other models.
I see about 50 of those things every morning on my commute - it's insane how many there are now...
"Detroit News" may have ulterior motives for signaling doom of Toyota and Honda - play X-Files theme now

Hmmm, I have to agree with Tosh & ScottB: I see a lot of Prius' on the road. But when I toyed with buying one last fall, I dumped the idea when told there was a waiting list, irregardless of option package and color. In hindsight, should have went with the Civic Hybrid on close-out...they had several on the lot, no waiting (and no mark-up).

BTW: Perhaps it's where I live, but I've noticed that the Prius seems to be popular with the "golden years" set. Just when you think you're going to see "Amnesty International" and "W-Sucks," you see "AAA" and "AARP" stickers on the bumper. That's sort of cool...

With my 120+ round trip commute if I see one (Prius) a week I'd be surprised.

Not very many around here. If I do see one, it's a out of state car.

Many more real cars like Corollas, Civics, Focus and Neons going down the road.

What I have really seen an increase of are Corvettes!

I see atleast 2-3 everyday. Alot of them are the C6.

And tons of jacked up trucks with big tires going 80mph in the 55 zone.

(Guess gas is not expensive enough yet?)

Back to the Fit. Too much for what your getting. I think the Yaris(sp) is in the same boat.

People will continue to pick up the Korean cars in the $12-14K.

$14-18k the Corolla and Civic will sell (though a co-worker bought a $21k Civic the other day

Take care, Bill

Well, is anyone shocked there's a ton of these in LA?
I'm not surprised OTOH, that there's few in Utah and VA.
But, my dad, who's in WI now, says they have a wait too - 6-8 months for a Prius!

I don't believe that they're not selling. When they go on sale, and have rebates, and I can see 10 of them at the local lots, I'll bite.

I get it.

OilBabe and I went to several Mizzou football games last year. The greatest irony was the Prius with the "W" sticker on it parked near the Ford Subdivision (IIRC, LOL) with the Kerry sticker on it.

I just had to laugh.

T

Not sure that's ironic at all.
If "W" let them drill in Alaska, they might not need their Prius

Maybe it's a statment to the contrary?

Scott

PS - I firmly believe that 99% of the poeple that buy these things are making a political statement and not trying "to save gas"

Why not buy a Civic Hybrid? They're cheaper and so inconspicuous that nobody will confuse it for a political statement.

Of course, you'll have that giant windshield to contend with...

Sorry, Mustang_Cougar...I meant I'll bite as in, I'll believe the story that they're not selling.
I'm not in the market for a hybrid.
I don't buy the global warming hype.
I don't want to make a statement.
I don't believe that saving $3000 in gas over my car's life (in my driveway) is worth $10,000 more for the car!

Scott

It looks like the Honda Fit is about the same size as my 84 Civic Wagon. Maybe this is a way to go back to a Civic sized car and not call it a Civic. The big difference is that the new car has a lot more stuff than the old one. It looks like adding stuff to a cheap car makes money, just like adding stuff to an expensive car.

I'd wait out the dealer premium the FIT and Yaris have at launch and probably 3.50 gas this summer. Then based on Honda pricing as of late I'd guess the FIT is still $3K over the Yaris and I'd be looking at Yaris this winter. I'll look at the FIT as the Yaris is the first car I've bothered to look at a new car dealer in awhile.

I do taxes in CA and saw lots of $30-35K Prius and $22K Civic Hybrids on my clients 2005 returns. A Yaris is $15k max for the same mpg. I agree with Scott there is no price that gas could be in the next 15 years that make these hybrids a good deal.

One of the car magazines did an article recently on the ecomony of the hybrids and concluded that the break-even point was well over 100K miles for all of the cars.

Since most buyers of new cars don't keep them 100K miles, I suspect that the first owner may not see the economic advantage.

Of course, there are many things that influence car purchases and seldom is economics on the top of that list.

For me, as I've said here before, if you want to save money on driving, the best place to save is on the hardware, not the fuel.

I like my SCION tC as well, but my Geo Prizm is a lot cheaper to drive. The Geo does get slightly better average fuel economy at about 32MPG vs 27MPG, but even if the tC doubled the fuel economy of the Prizm, the Prizm would still be cheaper to operate.

Speaking of "W", last week I took a trip to Jeff. City, MO to service a computer there, and got stuck in the road closures when he visited. Of course, it wasn't as bad as when Al Gore visited St. Louis in 2000 and travelled through the city during the evening rush hour. What was he thinking? A large portion of the city stopped in summer heat while he drove through.

Why do you say that?
