One of the car magazines did an article recently on the ecomony of the hybrids and concluded that the break-even point was well over 100K miles for all of the cars.
Since most buyers of new cars don't keep them 100K miles, I suspect that the first owner may not see the economic advantage.
Of course, there are many things that influence car purchases and seldom is economics on the top of that list.
For me, as I've said here before, if you want to save money on driving, the best place to save is on the hardware, not the fuel.
I like my SCION tC as well, but my Geo Prizm is a lot cheaper to drive. The Geo does get slightly better average fuel economy at about 32MPG vs 27MPG, but even if the tC doubled the fuel economy of the Prizm, the Prizm would still be cheaper to operate.
Speaking of "W", last week I took a trip to Jeff. City, MO to service a computer there, and got stuck in the road closures when he visited. Of course, it wasn't as bad as when Al Gore visited St. Louis in 2000 and travelled through the city during the evening rush hour. What was he thinking? A large portion of the city stopped in summer heat while he drove through.
