Car is an 05 Acura TL w/ 28k miles. When in 5th, going a steady speed, the rpm fluctuates up and down 100rpm (like when you have a vacuum leak). Happens randomly; most of the time ok. Fluid is the factory fill Z1 and will come out next month for Amsoil.

Anytime I have had a problem with shifting I have changed the trans filter and the problem went away.

But since this is a newer car it could be a sensor or maybe a vacuum leak.

Change the fluid and filter and then see what happens, is the check engine light flashing.

That is a fairly small rpm float, suprised you noticed, heck of a tach. TCC should lock up in a lower gear at about 40 mph. Hope the change helps this trouble.

Sure, maybe a trans problem, but this also could be en engine control problem.
Check for service bulletins and information in your particular car's enthusiast forums. Calls to the service dept at a few dealers may net you an answer, if this is a common problem.
TC lockup should have a greater speed difference than 100 RPM, but it is not ruled out.

Well the tc is definitely locking. Around 500rpm difference at 45mph.

As for the flucation..that shouldn't be possible if the tc is working properly right? I mean aren't engine and trans supposed to be directly coupled when it is.

Torque converter problems are not uncommon at all with the Honda 5-speeds. I wouldn't hesitate to have the dealer take a look at it. Go for a test drive with the tech.

i thought honda fixed their 5-speed auto problems. is it like you press the gas a little and it goes up ~100rpm and then the torque converter locks, almost as if it has a little delay in locking up, maybe more pronounced going up hills? this is probably normal and nothing to be concerned about, but when in doubt ask a honda tech.

For the most part they did. Most of the problems are gone. But once in a while, you still hear about a torque converter complaint.
