I want to buy an impact wrench rated to 300 lbs. But the prices between air and electric vary significantly, which would be recommended for minimal use like working on suspension.

For occasional use, so long as you can find a good quality unit that provides reliable service, I would choose electrical over air (cheaper, no need to spend mega $$ for compressor)
For frequent use and you are willing to shell out $$$ for space and power, air is definitely the way to go.

If you already have a good air compressor, an air impact wrench would be my choice. IMO, more reliable (with a little oil), consistent torque, basically unlimited run time, higher torque rating in a smaller package.
That being said, I would like to have a electric to complement the air impact I have because they are so darn handy and you can use them anywhere (without dragging a hose around)
For mimimal use a electric would be fine.

If I were going electric, I'd also go CORDLESS! Buy a good brand and the batteries and charger will also work later when you add a drill, skillsaw,sawzall,etc. My Dewalt will bust any car lugnut and the drill is also a hammerdrill. TOTALLY git-er-done tools!

I like my Milwaukee Electric Impact Wrench. It took off crank pulley nut within 5 Secs on my Integra.
Ingersoll Rand 2530K cordless impact. 19.2V, 350 ft-lbs and it does have a brake (some don't) i.e. when you let off the trigger, it slows immediately. Good to prevent nuts and bolts from flying off into the nether regions of the garage.
I think it might still be the most powerful cordless impact at the moment. Look on ebay, there's a seller there selling them for more than $100 less than retail (he includes a work light with it for a total of ~$250.
Not only works well on nuts and bolts on the car, it's also great for driving in lag bolts in wooden decking.

I have a good quality air compressor (oiled), but dont own an air impact wrench, because for changing tires, an electric (I have a high quality, made in USA Milwaukee one) works great.
Electric ones are more bulky though. However, to do an air one right, you really need a lot of flow, which makes your air compressor requirements high, and potentially in the realm of 240V operated...

I bought a Craftsman electric some years ago, since there is nothing other than an impact wrench that will let you get the crankshaft bolt off the Civic I was then replacing the t-belt on.
Works well, is handy for other tasks, and an electric is ideal for those who neither have nor really need a compressor.

This is exactly what I used to use mine for bluemax1. I have a Ridgid 18V Ni-Cd set. It's a nice little set. Would have preferred Makita, but the price AND the number of tools included in the Ridgid set was better.
