I'm going to try a thicker oil. GTX or VWB

So I'm going to experament and try either gtx 10w30 or valvoline 10w30 in my 09 2.4 Hyundai sonata. The reccomendation from Hyundai is 5w20, 5w30 or 10w30. I park in a heated garage and the weather outside is in the 50's anyways so I want to see what effects the thicker oil has on engine noise and feel. So far the only oil I've used in the car is Chevron supreme 5w30. What do you guys think?
 
Well you can go from a thin 5-30 like chevron to a thicker one like Valvoline WB.

Valvoline is a good oil and a little thicker than the chevron. Chevron is close to a 5-20 weight.

In any case IMO Castrol is not worth the extra 2.50 the Valvoline 10-30 will serve you just as well.

I doubt you'll notice anything from 5-30 to 10-30. In some instances, like M1, the 5-30 is actually thicker than the 10-30.
 
The chevron is a very thin 5w30. Is the engine noisey? Would rec a HM oil like QS HM 10w30 which has quieted most engines I've used it in. Also running a lower efficiency oil filter like purolator classic or wix will help. IN my experience in our subaru, Mobil Clean 5000 10w-40 mixes well with their 5w30 - you could run 1 qt 10w-40 on the balance of 5w30. I do not like MC 5000 10w30. I just did an OC with Havoline DS and our subaru is too noisey with that as well (its same as chevron) I just bought a bottle of bardahl no-smoke polar oil and I'm gonna add 4 oz of that to try and save the fill.

I've noticed that in all of the oils. The 5w30 is thicker when hot than the 10w30. The other thing is the VI is lower in the 10w30? I'm guessing its because the spread is smaller and they use less Viscosity improvers.

Big sale at my walmart on oil. IIRC Cstrol gtx was $13/ 5 qt jug. The QS HM will quiet the engine better than the GTX, IMRE.
 
Thicker via Vii on the 5w-xx is not a good as thicker by way of heavier base stocks in the 10w-xx as far as pistons are concerned - bearings dont care as much.

It has run quiet all winter and now that its warmer my gas milage is up form 28 to 30 and when I drive from my house on the hwy to the downtown, when I get there and am idleing I can hear that it is making more noise than it did in the winter. My guess is that its because of the increased temps and I want to test that by seeing if it goes away with a slightly thicker oil.

Castrol also has a $7 coupon on their website.

I agree and thats why im considering the 10w30 over the 5w30 since cold starts are not in my future.
 
I use 10w30 mobil one, synth, extended 15,000 mile oil, and a mobil one filter, the 5qts at Advance was 32 bucks which included the filter,,was a good deal...........today.V-8, 318ci one ton, van , 5600 Lbs empty, 8800 loaded, I use a 10k oci or once a month, which ever comes first. 203,850miles and climbing.
 
Try whichever is on sale first. VWB is a thick 30 weight, which should help with the noise. A closet thick 30 weight (M1 0w40) in my subaru quieted things down considerably.
 
Did your subaru have any hot wristpin-like or rod big end-like noise? I wouldnt think it would be piston slap hot - but I hear subaru are doing strange things with the piston shapes. Then you have a 4cyl with classic 4" bore and 1.5" crank throw! I have no valve clearance noise to speak of.

My 2007 Sonata has the 2.4L motor,it is a noisy motor at idle when hot. The best oil I've tried so far that keeps it quiet is PP 5w30.
 
GTX, you might be fine with GTX 5w30 instead of 10w30. As mentioned before, Chevron is a thin 5w30, while GTX is thicker. That might be all you need.
 
Is there any reason why any of you would choose WB Valv or GTX both in 5w 30 based on any technical data or real world observations through using them?

Are you asking me? I want to use a conventional as I have a quick drain valve and its cheaper and easyer for me to change between 3-5k than for me to use synthetic for 7-10k and worry. I want to use gtx or vwb because they are thicker 5w30's and 10w30's. I've used gtx 10w30 and 5w30 and thought it performed well and made a different car of mine run smooth as butter. The valvoline I have never used but have used napa oil in a truck I had and that performed well. The only reason why I would an might choose Valvoline over GTX is that I dont like that castrol dosent share any real info on their PDS when valvoline tells you almost everything.
