I'm going to do it-- 20K on RedLine

I'm just about done with a 7K OCI with GC 0w30 in the new 94 Suzuki Swift GT (1.3L DOHC), and all is well. I do a lot of freeway driving, and I've only owned the car one month and I'l already at 6800 miles.

The plan is to go on RedLine 5w30 or 10w30 and not change it until I hit 20K or 25K into it. I will change the filter (M1 or PureOne, have not decided) at least once during that time.

I have since switched back to a paper air filter, so these tests should be pretty straighforward with most types of driving-- some stop-and-go in traffic, high-speed, and the monthly autocross thrown in for good measure. If I chicken out I will do a UOA at 10K miles, but that is my minimum puss-out mileage point hehe.

Thoughts?

94 Swift GT DOHC, GC 0w-30.

Are there any Other RL's in any engine to do this before?

Just take your samples.

I've run Dino way way way past that so you should be fine! - well the potential is there anyhow.

But my thoughts are: Is this in the make-up of the average use for a RL user. In other words, is it part of the design of the oil to go on these types of ED's?

I know it's racing stuff. and have considered using it as an add to one of my brews but never have, I just wonder if it has it in it's make-up!
That would be my first question.

Other than catalytic converter poisoning, the RedLine seems to be great oil, on the street or for race engines. Paul Bonnacorsi (4-time SCCA National Champion- SSC and winningest Mazda driver, recently of TriPoint Engineering's SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Protege) is one of our team's Development Drivers and he could not say enough about RedLine, especially because the Mazda motors were built so loose that they would only last a practice/qualifying/race weekend, and they would still be rebuildable each time. They also used them in the trans, which worked out great. He used RL in his Showroom Stock cars for years before switching to Valvoline ("the official oil of SCCA", they gave out cases of Racing oil as contingency winnings) with very little ill effects, and the current RealTime Acura World Challenge teams use the RedLine exclusively, and they are one of Honda's winningest teams outside of Formula One.

I know that racing is much different than street driving, but those oils are **** good, and I'd be willing to risk my motor on a long OCI. I have also tracked every mile since I bought it for fuel mileage, and charted each change / repair and noted increases or decreases in mileage (my daily drive is boringly repetitive, down to the tenth of a mile every day).

Just want to see what you all think, or should I try the same with GC? RedLine is the one making the claim for "18,000 to 25,000 mile changes", not GC, so I thought I'd see if their word holds up. I'll be at 200K by Valentine's Day anyway, and this little test will be over in 14 weeks or less with my driving.

solo2driver,
Would you be interested in taking the GC out to 10k or 15k just to see where UOA would come out before going to Redline? Sounds like u know someone personally that uses redline alot...so you have a good idea what it could do for you. Just curious about the long drain w/GC. I've read alot of different opinions on this forum about the "cost" of redline, but if it doesn't bother you, then I'd say go with what pleases the "oil" senses! Would like to know the outcome with the oil you choose, either way!

Possibly, but this is the first synthetic oil that hs been run in this car after 140K miles, previously on a strict diet of Castrol 30HD and Fram filters and 2K mile OCI's. Motor is very very clean, but I just wanted to do a clean-up first with the GC at 7K miles. I was planning on changing at 5K, but it didn't fall during a good pay period :-P

Just think, I'd be changing my oil every other Saturday if I followed the 3,000 mile rule hehe.

I really like the GC thus far, and the motor seems to like it as well. Consistent 38mpg with spikes to 41mpg with no a/c or passing moves, and the oil is still a light amber/green color after only a filter change at 4K miles (I'm a wuss, I caved!) and barely a top-off for the filter, otherwise no need to add oil.

Well although I guess it doesn't matter because I've asked here before about BG oil,
and it appears no one has used it, but they claim they have a true SYN and you can do up to 20K+

Never heard anyone here say anything aboput it, but the rep was attempting to sell me on that.

I ran RL to a 10K OCI in my Isuzu 3.5L truck engine. I am unwilling to go farther with the OCI. There is little to gain and much to lose. This time I will change out at 8 or 9K with K&N filter. My wear numbers in the past have been great at that OCI. Acura SLX (fancy trooper) factory OCI is 7.5K on 10-30 dino with filter change every OTHER OCI. The Aussie web site says use 20-50 dino and most Aussie owners do just that. They have long trips in hot, flat terrain.
