If you bought a new vehicle today?

Step one take the manufactures recommendations and ignore them completely. As they push oils to the edge, and running thinnest oil they think they can get away with.

So I would run thicker oil than they recommend unless they recommend a 40 weight or thicker, and I would change the oil every 5 to 6k

Oil change after the first 1000 miles. Then at 5k and every 5k interval afterwards.

I wouldn't be aligned with any specific motor oil or filter. I tend to get synthetic oils that offer rebates. This year it was two 5 quart bottles of 5W-30 PUP full synthetic that netted out at only $10.80 per jug.

I would also go for maximum filtration levels (99% and 20 microns) without aligning with any particular brand. Just whatever is reasonably priced.

I would organize all my maintenance in 5k intervals.Tire rotations. Other fluid and filter replacements.

You can always change this to every 7500 or 10000 if you drive a lot on the highways, or have a hybrid or PHEV that's easy on oil.

The only new vehicle I ever bought is still on the road over 30 years later with what must be over 400,000 miles. By the time my new vehicle is that old, I'll probably be walking and taking buses. I'll give it to a grandkid if that hypothetical time ever comes.

I drive 110 + miles a day on interstates. I will run out of paint on my hood before I have an engine issue. With 10 k normal service oil changes in naturally aspirated Toyotas. I do tend to bump up viscosity a little and would again. At this point, my 2023 will probably get me to retirement. Even with. 36k miles a year.

I drove my new car home and drained out the 20 grade that it came with. I then replaced that with Mobil 1 0w30 for better moft and wear protection. I also changed out the original filter with a new OEM one. My OCI will be 5K miles or 6 months, whichever comes first.

Maybe white rogues do that to you?
A couple weeks ago I weened myself from the fear

A few months ago, we bought what we hope to be our last car (we're getting old), a Honda Pilot. I fretted over what oil to use, how often to change it, etc. Decided to go with Amsoil Signature Series and their synthetic media filters. Did the first oil change at 500 miles, then again a few weeks later after a 4k miles' trip. Sent samples for UOA at both.

After spending way too much time on this forum, I drank the HPL Kool-Aid, and during their Independence Day sale, bought enough PPPCMO oil to last for several years. Even with the discount, it wasn't inexpensive, but I wanted "the best".

Neither the Amsoil SS or HPL have API certification. I know it doesn't really matter, but Honda calls for API SN or higher certification, so I have my completely unfounded concerns about "what if something happens to the engine and I'm not using the correct spec oil?".

Had I to do it over again, I'd run down to Walmart and grab a few jugs of Mobil 1 ESP X2 (with API donut) and change the oil every 5,000 miles, keeping all receipts for oil/filter purchases if changing the oil yourself.

As for filters, I bought a case of the Pentius PLXL7317 UFXL (Ultra Flow Extended Life). Their construction seems to be almost identical to the Carquest Premium Guard filter mentioned earlier.
btw what did the 500 UOA show vs. subsequent ones, if you recall...

If I bought a new car I would definitely do the first oil change somewhere between 500 and 1000 miles, that’s something I have always done and always will do.

As far as the choice of viscosity, brand of oil and interval, that’s completely dependent upon what car it is. If it has an OLM I would follow that, if not I would do at minimum 6k intervals.

Use the PENNZOIL Ultra Platinum 0w-20 ( S.P. , GF-6A ) with HYUNDAI / KIA 26300-35503 oil filter for both new '25 KIA SOUL LXs' .
GRAVITY GRAY oil with filter change at 612 miles and the MARS ORANGE @ 880 miles . The Gravity Gray is on its second O.C. and the Mars Orange is due for its second O.C. within a month or 1+1/2 months . Next spring may start to use V.R.P. 0w-20 .

3-5k oil plus filter with M1 0W-40
Initial transmission fluid and filter 20k, every 30k there after just fluid maybe every 2-3x a trans filter
30k on diffs, then every 60k
Transfer case every 30k

Mfgr suggested trans and diff fluids

There’s a lot of evidence to suggest hybrids and PHEV’s are not at all easy on oil. Condensation and fuel dilution from a lack of consistent running seems to be common.

I’m about to buy a new Toyota Sienna, if the right one comes soon. It will have 2 changes at 10000 miles come with it.

I’ll do a change at 1000 miles, then at 5000 miles, let them do the 10000 mile change ,and continue the 5000 mile pattern.

I’m debating between Pennzoil and Mobil1 0w-16 oils, leaning towards Mobil1. I don’t even own the car yet and I’m looking at oil….

I ordered the Amsoil before we picked up the car, just to make sure I had it on hand for its first oil change.

My local Honda dealership uses bulk Pennzoil Full Synthetic for their oil changes. You might want to call yours and ask if they use bulk or bottles of Toyota-branded oil, and if bulk, what brand.
