If CO2 is so bad then why...

It's been said that one good volcano eruption can put out as much NOX as cars have produced since their inception.

I find it strange that NOX is regulated, but not sulfur compounds.

Since C02 is a product of a stoichiometric (i.e. perfect) oxidation of an octane molecule, the only way to "regulate" the emission of it is to either not drive your vehicle, or drive an electric or hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicle. I don't know if propane or LNG powered vehicles also emit CO2, but they could also be alternatives. Hydrogen fuel-cell cars would be ideal as they only emit water vapor

What came to my mind when I heard about this CO2 emissions requirement was that the goverment is trying to ultimately eliminate fossil-fuel powered cars/trucks in favor of those that do not use fossil-fuels, which the majority of the population do not use..or can't as the infrastructure is not able so support the use of them (i.e. hydrogen)

Here they do test for CO2, but there is no threshold that would cause your car to fail. It is more of a "FYI" on the smog certificate. However, that will be changing

Burning natural gas and propane does release CO2, as those fuels contain carbon. So do methane, kerosene, diesel, and all alcohols.

Not during mans time. There have also been times when the planet was frozen solid and times when the sea level was much higher than today. I dont think we want to go back to either.

In 2007, on road diesel fuel was required to go from 500 PPM sulfur to 15 PPM sulfur, and that did great things to reduce SO2.

There is so much hype behind CO2, nobody used a repeatable experiment to show the hazards to the environment, so it becomes a game of questionable cause and effect and false negative versus true positive arguments rather than the actual scientific process.

No it won't. They can't go and make something that was legal retroactively illegal.

They might try upping the fee for your plates etc... but if your car puts out what it did when it was new they can't get you.

Well, I guess we're living out the only truly non-repeatable experiment right now. Only time will tell.

I just think it's a fight that there's no possible way to win. You can't put this genie back in the bottle.

It's gonna be pretty hard, and take a long time to prove that we can go from an atmosphere of CO2 and methane, to the oxidative atmosphere that we enjoy, back to methane and CO2 a number of times to get the science "right"

Why can't they?

Ex post facto means you can't be punished for an act that is legal at the time you committed it.

In the situation of auto emissions, if California passes a law (call it the 2009 CO2 Control Act) they could not punish your 2005-2009 CO2 emissions from a vehicle made in 2005.

But they most definitely could fine you (or administer whatever punishment they deem correct) for CO2 emitted by that same vehicle in 2009 and later. It wouldn't matter a bit that the vehicle was legal during the 2005-2009 time period.

CO2 is .036% of our atmosphere.

Methane is 0.00017%

"Carbon dioxide is an important greenhouse gas. The human-caused increase in its concentration in the atmosphere has strengthened the greenhouse effect and has definitely contributed to global warming over the last 100 years."

Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine that Tempest would link to such a thing. It must really be true!
