We all would probably do well to say less and listen more. I wish I could take back some of the stupid and hurtful things I've said over the years. It's part of the human condition.
Ice like that is about the only reason why I'll start a car and walk away for it to warm up. 5 or 10 minutes on defrost (too bad I usually can't turn on recirculate) and it's a lot less work.
I've never tried sharpening an ice scraper but I can't see why not. What's the worst that would happen--you need to throw it out?
Usually I try to buy when on sale in spring. Lately I've been liking the ones with the long handle that extends, makes cleaning the top of truck easier of snow. I really should buy some sort of snow broom.

Get an extendable car wash brush. I've got one and it works wonders on snow! I can keep the truck in the garage when home, but it's handy when it snows all evening at work and I gotta clear off snow.

Yep, they work as long as the windshield is clean to start with. If the windshield is dirty the ice scraper will make the windshield scratchy scratched.
I bought my scraper in the '90s when a co-worker was with the Avon program. Hard plastic, worked fine in Denver and now here. It'd be nice to have a backup in case I lose this one.
(I'm about the only person I know here with an ice scraper. Most of the imbeciles use a credit card, or if they're really thick they use hot water. Crack!! )
Mine was "free" courtesy of Sixt rental car - long handle, snow brush and it has their logo printed on the side and it appears to have never been used. I figured I was returning the car in Georgia (picked up in Minnesota) they probably wouldn't miss it as they aren't typical equipment in Georgia rentals.
Now I have come to learn it is not needed in my E-Golf since I can remote start the defrost and car has a defrost grid in the windshield, 4-5 mins and frost and ice have transformed back to water. Speaking of I need to move the Sixt brush to the Sportwagen where it is actually needed.
I've bought a few although I've never really ended up using them. However, I wouldn't trust a dollar store special over a basic Hoppy. I've got one of these somewhere in my house, as well as some with colored handles. I think I paid about $1 for it at a gas station on the way to Tahoe. There's a scraper packaged with my tire cables, but I wouldn't really trust that not to break either.
My favorite scraper is a plastic one with a brass edge that I bought years ago from somewhere. I don't see those type for sale at any stores locally anymore.
I will have to pick up another one from that Amazon link posted above.
