I wish we had the cool cars of Europe here

Agree completely, always envious of the variety of cars available there, especially those form the niche manufacturers. Cannot think of any legitimate reason why various current auto standards cannot be harmonized between NA and the EU.

The only thing I can think of that Europe got and we didn't that I want would be an old Sierra or Escort Cosworth, not some anemic 1.6 diesel Puegeot.

Manufacturers in the EU make slight variants of their models to send to the US which comply with all laws in all states - first example that springs to mind is the E36 M3. Our cars had more displacement, better heads, bigger cams and 1 throttle body per cylinder, equating to a difference of 240BHP (US) and 321bhp (EU). This was for emissions compliance.

An earlier example was the MG B whose headlights were too low so they put a solid block above each front McPherson strut to raise the headlight height, hence the horrible handling. That law about headlines having to be a certain height above the road make it impossible for some cars to be legal in all states.
Some EU manufacturers have zero presence or brand awareness in the US so it would be pointless for them to be on sale to you guys who form such a small market.

And at the same time, the grass is always greener on the other side - id love to drive an Acura or an Infiniti, a Lincoln or Merkur or any of the current line of Buick that are rebadged Vauxhalls. My main interest would be to examine the differences in trim, fit and finish, and overall build quality between the two. Us humans always want what we can't have.

Ford tried to make a "world car" back in the 90s, with the intent of marketing it to both Europe and North America. It was called the Mondeo and didn't go over well. There were too many subtle differences between the two markets and Ford never pursued making a "world car" again.

What? Ford's solution after the bailout was to make world market vehicles. The Fiesta, Focus, Fusion/Mondeo, and Mustang.

It's a shame the US never got any of the cool European Fords, and if they did it was a heavily watered down version with hideous bumpers or something.

True, the Contour didn't do to well here. The average N.A. buyer doesn't place driving dynamics very high on their buying criteria, and value vehicle size/engine size more than the europeans, so the Taurus and Exploder sold, and the Contour didn't.
Quebec is a more european market and manuals and wagons and hatchbacks sell better there, but its only 8 million people, so its hard to bring over specific models for them, although even now Nissan sells the Micra in Canada primarily for Quebec.
Most economy cars do sell well globally (Corolla, Yaris, Fit) and Ford bringing the Focus to N.A. in 1999 did pretty well for them. The gen 2 Focus in europe became a bit more of a mid level car and with people here cross shopping Foci with extremely cheap to produce Cavaliers and Neons, I guess Ford figured people wouldn't pay more for a better driving car, so we got a Focus facelift in 2005 and not a better car.

...add the Renault R5 Turbo to that list. I was also thinking of any TVR or Bristol.

V8 Land Rover Defender, SWB Audi Sport Quattro, Caterham/Westfield, Renault Alpine 110, V6 Capri, most Alfas, early hydropneumatic Citroens, there are lots of cool/obscure european cars that didn't go to America just like we didn't get the AMC Javelin, Ranchero, ANY of the 440 6 pack cars, the list goes on..

I can source most European cars and arrange shipping.
