I should have bought a Buick

The more I've been reading about the 3.8l LeSabre the more I'm discovering it's a pretty good car.

My Corolla is only getting 23 mpg city. I could be driving a big comfortable Buick and be getting 20 mpg city.

I have a Buick with the 3.3.

It may fall apart today but I like Buick.

They really do ride good without being a boat.

The 3.8L is a WONDERFUL engine. I love mine. Buick has also been doing very well in the quality surveys recently. My wife and I just bought a Terraza (minivan). The only issue is a little crackling in the tinting around where the rear side window attaches to the mechanism that moves it in and out. Other than that, we've been completely satisfied.

Something's wrong. My 02 Corolla auto gets 32 in town and my 94 with a 5 speed gets about 33.

My 05 LE was rated at 30 city/39 hwy ... I actually get close to the 39 hwy, but from reading other Corolla boards the current generation usually gets between 22-26 city.

Am I correct in assuming the 3.8L GM gets about 20 city?

Yup; my mom's 3.8L gets about 21 in town and on fatland highway driving, it's gotten 33mpg once! Not too shaby.

My wife had a 95 Lesabre and now has a 99 Lesabre. The 95 would get 35+ on the road. We got that mileage trip after trip not just onced with the wind behind our back going down a slope. The 99 gets good gas mileage also, but, I haven't had a chance to check it. We got the 99 used (like new with 97,000) and couldn't pass it up for $4500.00.

97k miles seems high, but I've been reading about many LeSabre's getting >200k miles.

I wonder why the 3.8l in other GM models, e.g. Impala don't get the mpg or have the reliability of the Buicks.

I was thinking of getting a Corolla???

It was a little high mileage (certainly more than we were looking for and older too), but, we knew the people that owned the car. The body doesn't have a rattle, seats practically like new and the oil and filter changed every 3000 miles.

If a Buick is driven under the same conditions the likely case it will also get poor mileage too, below the average 20 mpg.

Mine is automatic. It's not uncommon for the new Corolla to get <25 mpg city. Check the Corolla forums.

I think 100,000 miles is midlife for the average car around here depending on age. When I'm at the wrecker I see a mix of cars between 2-300,000 kilometers. The lower mileage cars are usually just as old as the high mileage cars. I think VW diesel owners keep their dashboards as trophies...ya NEVER see them in the car but you're likely to see a trunk load of spare parts.

It's not really about longevity for me. I don't doubt Toyota quality, but it seems the 3.8l GM is pretty reliable also.

I'm just thinking that if you could get the benefits from a larger car (LeSabre) with only a minimal hit at the gas pump it's sound pretty enticing.

My Grand Prix would get about 30 on the highway doing 75-78. Can't complain when at the push of a pedal you could have 250 hp and a nice whine.

05' Corolla: I know the LaSabre 3.8 can get 30 mpg on the highway but I think city mileage would be in the mid to high teens. I think you'll do about 9-10 mpg better all around with the Corolla and that ain't to shabby. My 6 cyl. Century gets the same if not slightly better mpg than my wifes
Accord 4 cyl. I'm not all that impressed with the 01'Accords mpg which is about 24 with a mix of in town and highway. Its a 4 cyl VP which the sticker claimed 23/30 mpg. The Buick claimed 20/29 but I regularly get 32 on the highway
