I just felt my first earthquake....

Isn't there a major fault that run through or close to St. Louis? Seems like I've read that somewhere before. Or maybe it was a movie I saw.

That's pretty spooky. Heck, floods, tornadoes, and now earthquakes in the Midwest. What's next?

I felt it here in suburban Chicago; I was already awake and just waiting for the alarm. It was quite noticeable.

You are thinking of the New Madrid fault. This earthquake was in the Ozark Dome region and not associated with the New Madrid fault.

About 25 minutes ago, we had an earthquake roll through here.

5.4 magnitude, centered in southern Illinois, according to the USGS.

WOW. Now I understand...

Anything over 5.0 is usually a little unsettling. 5.7 gets scary.

Was it one jolt or series of jolts? Or was it more like a swaying motion or a rumbling? I find the swaying most unsettling, because it usually feels like the house is going to fall over. I live near the San Andreas fault, which runs under the Pacific only a few miles offshore.

Felt it roughly 150 miles due east in Southern Indiana. What a weird sensation, the house shook and made noises.

Interesting scale. Every elevation of 2 is 1000 times more energy.

Earthquakes. Not just for the west coast any more.

I've been through all the biggies in Cali-WA since 1958. 6.8 is pretty fun. 7 gets my attention. 7+ is fun, but people can die.

Most of my earthquake stories luckily, or thank the big guy, involve humor.

Amazing factoid is to compare the damage done/lives lost relative to size and building codes/styles around the world. Mind boggling.

Woke me up in Cincinnati. I bet this fault line is a finger off the New Madrid.
I remember in college a geology teacher I had kept telling us about New Madrid. It always stuck with me so I would tell people about it and they would always roll their eyes.
I just emailed my State Farm guy about adding the appropriate rider to my insurance, needless to say.

We've had many small earthquakes here in North AL over the years. They're all scary, because you don't know at the time just how powerful the quake is going to be.

The last one a few years ago felt like there were a couple of meth'ed up monkeys trying to shake me out of my bed. Unsettling....

Most of the quakes we have around here we slept through, as they are usually pretty small (we live within 10 miles of a fault line).

The strongest one happened while we were eating supper. The noise and vibration from it was rather unsettling...at first I thought that a plane was in trouble (we live on the flight path to an international airport) until I felt the floor start to vibrate.

never fealt one. though growing up near a large rock quary was fun.. i would be riding my bike around the yard and i would hear a BOOOOM! then about 3 seconds later the ground would shake. once in a while it would shake me off my bike. but i am assuming this doesnt compare to most earth quakes lol
