Hmmm ...help me out with this perception here.

If I inverted the base plate on the left ...would it look just like the one on the right?? The "thin" part of the thread is internal/down on the left ..and external/up on the right. Everything else appears inverted too.

Yep, I see the same thing. I wonder if there are advantages to each? Who knows?!

Both filters have a great reputation, so perhaps there is more than one route to excellent filtration...

I finally got my hands on a real Motorcraft FL299. I had to go to the Ford dealer and order it... even with my commercial discount it was fourteen bucks and change. I just had to have one, though, so I could see how it stacks up compared to the competition.

It's a hefty, solid, impressive piece.

I also dug my FL-1a out of my stash and brought it to my office for examination.

FL299: 21.5oz.
FL-1a: 15oz.

So, the FL299 is heavier that its equivalents from Donaldson and Wix (I haven't gotten the Baldwin yet) and the FL-1a is lighter than its equivalent from Donaldson.

Maybe weight means nothing, but it is interesting that similar filters vary so widely in weight.

Today, my Baldwins showed up! Weights:

BT251 (FL299 equiv.): 20oz.
B2 (FL-1a equiv.): 18oz.
B2-HPG (High Perf. Glass element): 18oz.

Besides the neat red color, these are impressively constructed filters. I can hardly wait to get 5,000 miles of oil in them and cut them open!

I found a FRAM PH977A (FL-299 equiv.). Here's the weight:

Fram PH977A: 18oz.

One interesting sidenote: the PH977A appears to have a standpipe inside it, since I can't see any holes in the center tube. This is the first time I've seen one of these. I can see it would be of some benefit if the filter is mounted open-end down (and provided that the ADBV works, but then this is a FRAM

). In fairness, though, this ADBV looks different than other FRAMs I've seen, so maybe it does work.
