Here's what I ordered from B-Line

Motorcraft FL299/Wix 51773 equivalents (long case):
Baldwin BT251
Donaldson P550299

High Performance/High Efficiency FL-1a equivalents:
Baldwin B2-HPG
Donaldson P169071

Standard FL-1a/Wix 51515 equivalents:
Baldwin B2
Donaldson P550008

Do any of you have experience with any of these filters?

I got two of each, and if I'm brave, I'll cut an example of each filter open, along with a FL-1a and a 51773, and maybe the GIGANTO 51714, just so we can all see what the ultimate is like. What do you say?

Of course, I'll weigh them all, too. Then, we'll know if weight and element size are a direct correlation.

I'll post the pics, of course.

Oh, Dave, you're in deep, my friend.

Now if you're really addicted .....

Now there's what I call a filter mount

Gary, I'm gonna make that picture my Windows desktop... it's a thing of beauty.

Think of how many of those I could fit in the bed of my pickup! I could run the lines back to the bed and filter my oil through 400 GIGANTO filters!!!

Maybe then I could extend my OCI's out to 5,000 miles with Rotella 5W-40... think of the possibilities!

That's a sweet setup! If they're parallel, which I suspect they are, you might get enough flow through 'by-pass' type filters, so you could have a full-flow contraption that filters to by-pass specs.

I remember someone who put a Luber-finer 750 by-pass housing in the back of their Chevy pickup, doing oil analysis, and easily going 50,000 miles between oil changes...

and fwiw..B-line is a customer of ours and i've been there a number of times. And I don't like to promote any distributor but I have mentioned them via pm to a few on here. B-line gets 2-3 trailer loads of Baldwin a week. They also buy from Donaldson, Fram

, and AC if memory serves. They sell lubricants as well.

They also own two heavy duty/ over the road truck oil change facilities.

btw..I think that picture is of a remote Caterpillar oil filter set up for stationary engines that could be used in a power plant type application for example.

Dave. Tried to install the Napa Gold 1714 filter on my 04 Focus base 4 cylinder. The threads appear the same but could not get filter to thread up. Possibly the block interfers slightly with the O.D. of the filter and would not let the threads start. Noticed the paint on the O.D. rubbing off of the base when I tried to start the threads. Returned filter and have to try another size. Currently stuck with the ST3600 which seems to work fine but always looking for bigger filters.

I have used the donaldson p169071 for a couple of years on my mopars. Excellent filter, keeps oil clean longer than others. Supposed to flow an incredible amount also.

Are there any instructions available for installation of that 8-pack in my '95 Civic??? I would LOVE extra oil filtering capacity!

With my truck I think I can fit three of those in parallel! I wonder what the wife will say?

FB, the hot ticket for a standard Focus engine is not the (5)1714... it has a different gasket size than is required for a Focus.

For a Focus, you want the Wix 51214/Napa Gold 1214, which is for a Jaguar (Ford owns Jaguar, of course). It is the same diameter as the stock Wix 51215/Napa Gold 1215, but it is longer, with more oil and element capacity.

Give it a shot!

O.K. Dave, My oil capacity greed grows by the day so hope the Napa #1215 converts to a Supertech #. One brand or the other the longer filter gets tried next week. Where are you getting your filter conversion numbers? All I have is a Fleetguard book from Cummins. Thanks for the info, also have an 95 Escort that might take the longer filter as the Focus interchanges with it now.

Oh ...Dave has "The BIG BOOK". He's got the keys ..the secret code ..the wigi board ..the crystal ball.

Actually, it's the Napa Gold 1214, NOT the 1215. The 1215 is equivalent to the stock filter, and the 1214 is the longer one.

Gary, that's hilarious!

I simply preach the gospel of BIG filters, and others find it pleasing. Big filters are nice. Big filters are good.

Big O Dave,
I'm really interested in opening up the P160971 Donaldson.
I've used two of them in the last six months that were manufactured in '02 (I don't think this is a high volume item herer in Oz.

, and appeared to be assembled by Champ. One used one is still here waiting to be cut up, the other one appeared to have a crook ADBV when removed.

Well, my Donaldsons arrived today, direct shipped from Donaldson's Ontario, CA, warehouse.

The P550008 and the P550299 look very different from other Ford-equivalent oil filters I've seen at the open end. They are deeply dished, as opposed to being nearly flat.

The P169071 looks more like other filters at the open end.

As far as weight, here are the numbers:

P550008: 18oz.
P550299: 21oz.
P169071: 20oz.
Wix 51773 (equivalent to P550299): 18.5oz.

I find it interesting that the P550299 weighs 2.5oz more than the Wix 51773. I wonder why?

It also appears that the bypass valve in on the closed end of the Donaldsons, including the highly touted P169071. From peering through the threaded opening, it looks like the bypass valve is different from what I've seen before in closed-end bypass valves...

Of course, the Wix has its bypass valve at the threaded end.
