My front engine cover leak finally gave out on me so now I need to replace it. I finally get to see the state of the bottom end of my engine. I've been running synthetic since about 80,000 miles. I did the head gasket at 100k and the top end was varnished heavily but no sludge. Since then I've used high detergent oils and MMO so we will see.

I will post some pics tomorrow...
 
How many miles are presently on the car?
Bottom ends are bathed in oil, and are usually clean no matter what. Maybe some discoloration.
 
Not sure what vehicle you have, but on my c1500, i was able to get a pair of 16in channel locks too hold the outside housing, then get a buddy to spin the actual fan nut. Like i said i dont know what you are working on and this probably wont help but for my truck those big channel locks were a life saver.

I used a fan clutch wrench on the Fords I did, makes it easier. IIRC they are also reverse threaded so tight=loose, loose=tight. Double check to be certain, its been a while. HTH
 
The one on a Discovery is not reverse threaded (maybe because they are english made?). I have a 36mm wrench from Nothern tool. With that and a home made spanning tool I was able to get it off.

Please explain this a little more. The nut on the Ford is reverse threaded so that it does not loosen up as the engine turns. Matter of fact, it slightly tightens and you never have to worry about the nut coming loose.
The one on the Discovery is the opposite? So you DO have to worry about it loosening up as you drive?
Like I say, explain this so my I know how this works.
 
I'm not sure what there is to not understand. I turned the wrench to the left and it loosened. I reckon the engine turns in the opposite direction then. Here is a page from the shop manual specifying it is RH threaded:
