I have an original 1965 Chevelle with 26,000 miles. Should I just use a conventional motor oil?

Welcome to bitog.

I wouldn't. There is no benefit in using that, only downside. Besides almost all SP oils are syn blend even if they don't say so. I'd use anything euro or diesel rated off the Walmart shelf and enjoy it.

Do I have to be concerned about old seals that newer synthetics could get past...

No it's mostly nonsense. If it was already leaking it's gonna keep leaking, if it wasn't then it won't. And a lot of synthetics don't clean that well, they won't quickly remove sludge in the pan like many think.

I think we're being trolled. For someone with a 58 year old car that has just 26K miles sounds a bit suspect. Coupled with such a "generic" first question and generic first reply....

To the OP; how about a picture of your Chevelle, its history, and at least some kind of introduction of yourself. Three of four decent sized paragraphs and a half dozen pictures would be a good start.

I'm not sure he's trolling. The trolls typically start off with something inflammatory first thing.

The red is perfect.

As to your question, most synthetic oils these days are majority Group III base stocks anyway which is chemically similar to a “conventional” oil but better. Higher viscosity index and lower saturates and sulfur compounds (contaminates).
