I feel that I have the best Customer Service. Not only do I greet every customer that does not make a beeline to what they want that comes through our door, but sometimes, I handle things in a way that makes everyone smile.
Just now, a man clearly under the influence of a "downer" came in off the highway. Snot from nose because it is slightly cold outside, moving slow, eyes red. Talking slow. All good.. Wanted a Black and Mild Filter Tip. I let him know FT was the one we did not have.. offered him the regular 85 cents one. He pulled out a wad of money, moving slow. Asked "Is there anything cheaper," I told him we have a 74 cents Swisher, but would he like the Black and Mild. All good.
He actually dropped a dollar bill and a customer was waiting to get a soda. So I made eye contact with other customer, and went around counter, keeping my distance because drugs will mess you up, but confidently reached out my arm, announcing, "You dropped a dollar bill, sir. I don't want you to leave it, let me help you find it." After 30 seconds, I determined he realized he dropped it.. all good.
So, I reached to the two dollars (a part of that wad of money) and said, "OK, I have the one dollar for your Black and Mild, I owe you 15 cents." (No fear, just a guy a little under the influence of some kind of opiate.) I made the change, gave him the 15 cents. Twice, I did say, "Alright sir, thank you, and if you want some coffee or soda or something, you go right ahead." The second time, I ended it with "You take it."
Coup d'gras? He wanted a lighter.. I said, "For you, sir, I will give you a lighter." He thanked me.
Charged the other customer the 74 cents for their 52 oz. Soft drink... made this post.
How did I do?
EDIT: He is actually outside the door and cashier window right now, doing a Newark-style "bop" smoking the Black and Mild. Nobody else is here, presently no customers or cars. How long should I wait for him to leave, before I call the Police? (*they can get him medical attention if that is what he needs)
**It is 11:45PM.. Maybe until Midnight? ...
