I haven't posted in a while, but I since got rid of my 1999 Corolla oil burner and have a 2007 Toyota Highlander 2.4L, well with needing more money I drive for Uber about 30 hours a week as well as deliver pizzas 30 hours a week. I put on about 1,000 miles a week and the car uses 1/2 qt between 4500 mile oil changes with dino oil, havoline, peak, Pennzoil 5w30, Ive been using conventional purely for economics, but I'm wondering if using a synthetic oil maybe be better as its definitely severe service but I want what is the best value, all things included, OCI, gas mileage, maybe going to a 0w20 for better gas mileage. Or just stay with the on sale dino every 4500 miles and be fine with it?

You will probably get a host of different answers. It it were me, I would use Mobil 1 5W30 Extended Performance. Change it every 8-10K. The cost would probably about the same considering the extended mileage between changes.

At any rate, you will definately free up some time by not having to change the oil so often.

Also. a Fram Tough Guard filter. Decent longer service quality for the money.

+1 on what wj said, especially when you factor in your busy schedule. A lot of people do a cost benefit analysis and apparently feel their time is worth nothing.

If you can't get to an OC and run long it will give you an extra measure of protection.

Quaker State Ultimate Durability would be my vote for you. Easily serviceable in the 8K-10K area in a Toyota engine. QSAD would be good for 5K-8K. I'd flip a coin or choose which color bottle I like best.

What's severe about always having warm oil? Aren't there good taxicab UOAs at like 12.5K on conventional?

If I were in your shoes I'd actually keep conventional plus a few filters around, but spontaneously change it when business is slow. Also have a pair of extra tires already mounted on wheels ready to go.

I have to be the first to ask, have you ever worked both jobs simultaneously?

You'd really have to "run the numbers" and calculate the costs of each. Depending on your synthetic choice anywhere from 7500-15000 miles. I frequently run QSUD in my truck which runs to about 8500 before I change it with about 20% left on the IOLM.

If you have Menards near by QSUD goes on sale for $4.99 then after MIR its $2.99 per quart. I would be comfortable running 8500 miles with that oil in most conditions, though I have yet to send in for a UOA (two sitting on the table waiting for extra cash to grow on the maple tree out back).

Since that oil will almost always be warmed up even if its stop and go driving in the city. I would easily try to do 10k on a decent oil and get a UOA to back it up.

TIME IS MONEY FOR YOU. I would hate to work on the car on my day off I was doing a 60 hour work week.

Agreed. Go with Some EP or other 15k mile rated syn and a good filter and run it 10k or so.

With the engine running a lot and adding a 1/2 qt every 4.5k you should have enough TBN to run 10k easy.

Also M1 Ep as other recommended.
You live in state with high humidity, high temperatures. Probably a lot of city driving, idling etc. Do not overthink this. You are working 60hrs a week, use the best. M1 EP is not expensive at all, since it can go even in those stress conditions 10K. If you have extra money, do UOA, so you are 100% sure TBN is still strong, not too much sheer etc.

4500 is a REALLY short change interval for your situation. Bump it up to at least 5k and maybe 8k to 10k depending on how many hours of use the oil gets (lots of idle time probably?)

If you have an hour meter I would be more inclined to change at a certain amount of hours ran rather than mileage.

My old police car got a conventional change every 5K miles and it was ran HARD and idled for 10-12 hours a day.

laserred96gt: Its worth it definitely late nights on the weekend.

Thanks for all the responses, I am a big quaker state fan as another guy at dominos hasn't changed his in a year in a 95 escort and its straight green bottle 10w30.

I still have a stash for two oil changes some mobil super and some peak, but definitely will consider the mobil1 ep if I can get a good price, or maybe qsud.

eljefino: No though I have thought about it, if I could have a pizza oven in the back, I would be rich, I keep my car really clean but theres a faint smell of pizza which makes passengers crave it, I could get $5 a slice I'm sure, lol

Yes lots of good advice here, go the M1 EP and increase your OCI. It should free up some time and give a margin for error.

Anyway, full respect to you OP. Working two jobs and 60 hours a week with late nights. You are obviously a hard worker, good on you.. I had a full time civilian job, as well as being a Sapper in the Australian Army Reserve, with floods, bush fires and the war on terror, that kept me well busy. There was a four month period there where I worked every day solid without a break, so I know what it's like.

If I was you I would use Amsoil Signature Series 0W-20 along with a quality filter. Aim for a 15k mile change interval, but at around 10-12k I would draw a sample and send to Blackstone Labs for analysis to see how it's holding up. If you do a lot of idling it's hard to say how much that will degrade your oil. Maybe the oil will hold up beyond 15k miles. You sound like a busy guy; you could save some time and money by extending your OCI based on how the oil is actually holding up, and not just guessing.

Great advice, using the newest "Extended Performance" oils out there to go longer without having to constantly crawl under the car, can get old after a while! I like Castrol Edge xtended Performance gold colored jugs on Amazon.com, or M1 ext perf, delivered for free if you spend more than $40 or something, no "amazon prime" needed.
Also, the Fram Ultra oil filter is a great one for long OCIs, best filtering performance I've ever seen in ISO tests too.
