I.D'ing a s.b.c. engine block

The Vin should tell you what plant the car was made at. Would that be the same for the engine?

Perhaps a dealer could look it up with the Vin number if the car is not that old. if its a 66 Nova

that be be a little harder to track down. but not impossable.

The VIN # is not stamped on the front pad below the passenger cylinder head on a 66 Nova (if you are looking for the stock engine). I think Corvette's ONLY had the VIN stamped at the point in time.

Look for the casting number on the driver side at the very back of the block where it bolts up with the transmission.

There is also a casting date on the passenger side where the block bolts up to the transmission.

There are exception to ALL of these above but a generally true for any block cast prior to 71-72.

Sometimes there will be no code on the front stamp pad due to parallel decking the block prior to re-assembly before rebuild.

it's for an elco that i have. According to the block pad,it's not the original engine. The letters on the pad are CKR .All the engines that come up with those letters are all 4bbl. This one has a 2bbl.the engine looks stock as [censored]. It has all the a.c. on,the stock air filter, etc. it's a 71

My Motors manual says that CKR is a 1970, 400 cu in engine. How many freeze plugs are on the sides of the block?

I wouldn't be concerned about the 2bbl intake. It could have been swapped in the last 35 yrs.

Whats the vin? That'll tell you what the car came with originally.

As for the 3970010 casting is common as dirt. Its the original engine in my '73 Nova as a 2 bolt 2bbl. Its the engine in my pickup as a 4 bolt 4bbl. It was also in my uncles '80 blazer.

One more thing, the Motor's list (the one usually referenced with the block stamping) is not infalable. Back when I spent too much time with my nose buried in various manuals trying to find infomration I found a few errors that didn't correspond with something I'd visually seen myself in known original vehicles. You might also discover some year to year changes in the Motors manual.
If you found the CKR stamping, that means you will find some other digits stamped in that pad, what are they?

Alex.

Flint engine plant, January 20th. Probably out of a '73 Nova.

Put some brake clean on a rag and clean that pad, you should be able to find signs of the other stamping, which is a partial vin.
These are sometimes very faint (as the one in my truck) and need a bunch of clean up and a strong light to see.
If you don't find anything else after close up examination it was likely a service replacement engine (the reason there is no partial vin since it was never installed while going down the line). Given the CKR, odds are its an engine that was replaced sometime in 1972/3/4/5, depending on how long engines sat around back then.

Alex.
