I cut open a few filters

I cut open a Puro L14477, Microgard 10241, Motorcraft FL400S and an old style Fl820.
Here's the line up on my truck tailgate:

The Bases all seem very similar - heavy with 3 or 4 threads

The Puro 14477 is the taller version of the 14476 that lists for my old Camry 2.2. Regular and plain - Looks good, as it should.

The Microgard is from Oreilly's but I understand they have since changed suppliers. Not a great looking pleat but I may have damaged it while cutting it open.

The Motorcraft FL400S looks good. The silicone ADBV seems stout. It had a piece of bright metal crimped over the union of the pleats but my cutter knocked it off. The end of the media is well sealed to the filter end.

The Motorcraft FL820 is an old one I found at a friend's house. You can see the rubber ADBV but look at how well the media is secured to the filter end!

I'm really liking the Motorcraft's construction! Opinions?

+1 on the Motorcraft filters. I use the FL1-A on my 5.7 Hemi. It is oversized for my application, well constructed, and only about $3.50 at Walmart all day long.

I'm actually using a FL400s on my Camry right now! The gasket fits just over the edge of the mounting pad. It has a silicone ADBV, similar pressure release valve rating and is at least twice as large. Twice the oil capacity and filter media! And at a cheaper price - $3.77 at my local Walmart. Plus I tried an experiment and used Mobil Delvac 15w40 Diesel oil. I had a little engine noise and the Delvac quieted it down to nothing. Don't get me wrong, there was very little noise to begin with but an engine with 368,000 miles is going to have a little noise in the valve train. It surprised me as I did not expect any difference. The Diesel oil may be sealing my rings better too, since the oil is not turning dark and thin nearly as quickly as other oils I have used, both syn and dino. Could be valuable info if buying or selling...

I don't know who makes Micro Gard, but now that you mention it, I would not be surprised if it is Fram. The newer line seems poorly constructed and I wont use em.

I've read the FL400s is shorter but I never had an older one so I can't compare it. The way Motorcraft rates their filters' efficiency is kinda wacky but judging from the media, it sure looks like a Puro. Maybe a PureOne as mentioned on this site! Regardless, the price is great and it's a great filter, so guess which one I'm using?

They are all Purolators, with the Motorcrafts just being made to a different spec for Fords. They should all be of decent to above-average build quality and should be solid for regular OCIs.

And yes, newer Microguards are now made by Fram.
