It has a more robust add pack and has been proven to handle severe service exceptionally well. My OCI's are 12,000Km.

What is you present oil? Are you having issues with the oil not holding up or not protecting? What I an getting at is does the engine need the different oil?

Mobil 1 5w20. It replaced whatever garbage was in there when I bought it. It has been in there for two days

You need to send all of that evil T&TD to some needy BITOG member. They can use it ..and it will do you no more harm ..in both mechanical or emotional damage.

Those engines seem to last with the 20wts. The company I used to work for in the San Francisco Calif. Bay area ran Delo 400 30 wt in their Ford vans they had some with the ohc engines and they seemed to work. see how you like the 20wt oil. The 40 wt may be more than you need . How about the Petro Can 0w30 Hdeo?

Well, I have a stash of the 5w40...... And the Lincoln loves it.

You guys ran a straight-30 in some Modulars?

None. It is just an SOHC 5.4L with some big, long timing chains.

The company I worked for did, the owner of the compamy was a pretty sharp guy and mentioned to me in a conversation that 30 wt. was ideal for the climate in the bay area which is true. The company owned a couple semis. 2 ten wheelers with roll back beds ,300 + forklifts 35 or 40 Ford E350 service vans and odds and ends cars and pickups and sweepers .Each van had a compressor which ran Delo straight 30 in the compressor engines and the compressors , the compressors outlived the vans so a new van would usually get an old compressor from a retired van. The company ran the 30 wt Delo 400 in the modular engines as well as everything engine they owned and serviced.

I put 5w20 in the Expedition. It calls for 5w20. But I want to put Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 in it. But I also don't want to. I have no doubt that the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck is superior in basically every aspect. But the engine calls for 5w20. ARG!!!!!!!!

This is actually making my head hurt......

Owners manual says 5w20, then thats what you use!

Dont make somethin so [censored] easy into something so [censored] hard! Waaaay too much of this on these forums anymore.

You want an oil thick enough to protect in your most severe operation but not so thick as to waste your [k]mpgs and power.

Indeed. I am more confident in the protection offered by D1/Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck I think is what it is coming down to here.

Generally the suggestions in the owners manual are a compromise and not the "best" choice. I follow the OM until the warranty has expired and then move on to the best (in my opinion) alternative.

Ditto that but engines seem to live a long time with the 20wt in passenger car and light truck use. I wonder if it has to do with the smaller viscosity range.5w-20 vs.5w30.

Run the 20wt for a regular oci, do a used oil analysis to put your concerns at rest, then use whatever you want

A good synthetic 20wt will protect real nice.

Ford now recommends 5w-20 for a 7500 mile service interval for the new Expeditions, fwiw.

They have never had any wear problems with 5w-20 on these engines, and 5w-20 has been in use for well over 5 year now. While it's possible that 5w-40 may be slightly better in therms of wear protection, it's unlikely that you'll experience the difference-- you're probably splitting hairs.
