I am having an oil dilemma that is (embarrassingly?) bothering me.....

I put 5w20 in the Expedition. It calls for 5w20. But I want to put Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 in it. But I also don't want to. I have no doubt that the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck is superior in basically every aspect. But the engine calls for 5w20. ARG!!!!!!!!

This is actually making my head hurt......

Whats wrong with 5w20? What benefits would you see putting 5w40 in it? other than making you feel good? Im not an expert at all. If the engine calls for 5w20 put 5w20 in it.

Compromise. Go with 5w30. I wouldn't want 5w-40 in there during the cold winter months - yes it can handle it, but it's significantly thicker then 5w-20 and would probably hurt fuel mileage and to a small degree, engine performance.

The Ford GT and GT500 call for 5w50

But it is BETTER! LMAO! That's the issue I am having here. I have no doubt that the Mobil 1 5w20 is a very good oil. But I know that in terms of robustness, that the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40/Delvac 1 5w40 is a much stronger oil. And I have 15L of it.....

I know. But most believe that the 5w20 is for CAFE reasons......... The performance versions call for a heavier oil.... My Mom's 2000 calls for 5w30.

Castrol EDGE 5w30?

Seriously, if your head is hurting trying to decide what motor oil to use, it's time to sit down with a cold one and watch some TV or something.

Corporate Average Fuel Economy. The lighter oil helps fuel economy by a small amount.

I am as big a fan of the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 as you, but I would be hesitant to run that oil in a Canadian winter, perhaps Mobil 1 0W-40 until at least spring?

Well I've run it 1/2 the winter in my Town Car

Though last year I ran the 0w40 and it definitely started easier.

ok, A TSB was released by ford years ago to backspec alot of their auto's from 5w30 to 5w20. I only paid attention to the Rangers/3.0 equiped autos. From 93 to 2002 or so they called for 5w30. Why would they recommend 5w20 oil in autos that came from the factory filled and ran for years with 5w30? Why would they care about fuel efficiency in their old autos? I feel there must be another reason for this. possibly a cam synchro issue that plagues Rangers and possibly other models? It is a theory going around the Ranger forums.

Sorry to highjack!!

Superior in what way ? How long are your oil change intervals.? If 5,000 miles of less there is no benefit . If a certain oil keeps the parts seperated and the antiwear additives are enough to protect the engine. An oil that may give you 50% more of what you don't need will not give you any benefits . I would bet without any mechanical failures your engine will out last the rest of youe expy.
