Hyundia OEM filters only?

Own a 2010 Elantra, bought with 15K on it, have 34K now. Changed oil at 20K, put on a Fram, car had an off brand filter on it (probably the Toyota dealer I bought it from). Next OC had Hyundai dealer service the car and they put on a Hyundai filter. OC after I went back to a Fram. The Hyundai filter was solid, heavy, looked to be very good construction from the outside. Haven't heard any start up noise with any of the filters, I'm running QS oil just to play the warranty game. Next OC I am going with a Purolator One and staying with QS.

MDS : You don't have to stay with QS oil in your Elantra - its just a marketing tie in shown in your owners manual ! I'd stay with the OEM filter (it's very good) or use Pure One. As for oils in my 2010 Elantra - I do well with PYB , PP , QSUD , QSAD and MS5K ...The only oil to date I did not care for was Mobil 1 (made the engine have a buzz type sound during accelaration) .

The OEM filters are much less efficient than aftermarket filters, opting for flow over filtration, meaning the aftermarket filters are more restrictive on your oil pressure. The valve train noise is due to this. Toyota's filters are in the 50% efficiency range, and Honda's are in the 60% range. Honda recommends running their filters TWICE. Just buy OEM filters in bulk (6, or so) if you're having this problem. If Kia will warranty the car with these filters on them, they can't be that bad.

To your door for $8.67 each (if you buy 3 and if this is the correct one) - Amazon - Beck Arnley 041-0853 Oil Filter [/quote]

I also buy filters online for our 2012 Kia Sorento v6 as Wallys in my area doesn't yet stock the Fram cartridge. Using this Beck-Arnley buy 3 comparison I came to $7.57 each delivered to my house in NH through RockAuto. I buy the Mann Filters through RockAuto...4 of them run me $6.33/each delivered.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Over 8 bucks! Ha, they are worth 4 or 5 IMO. If Wally's carried the Fram it looks like they'd be about 6 bucks based on their other offerings, I'd take it if I could get it.

Thanks I will look into those.

The oil pressure at the engine's oiling system inlet (where the pressure gauge is located) will only be effected by a more restrictive oil filter when the oil pump is at pressure relief. With a positive displacement oil pump, the pump will force all of output flow through the filter & engine until the pump hits the pressure relief setting. I have verified this with 4 different brands of filters on my Z06 which has an on-board oil temp and oil pressure readout. I saw zero oil pressure difference between all those oil filters under the same operating conditions (ie, various oil temp and engine RPM).

One theory on why some KIA/Hyundai vehicles have engine noises is because someone has used a super cheap (probably Chinese counterfeit) oil filter that is probably so restrictive that the oil pump goes right into pressure relief, which would then cause a decrease in oil flow to the engine.

I just bought a 2014 forte, I plan on sticking with the oem filters. I seen one cut open on a Kia forum, looked solid also had a silicone anti drain back valve. I would post a link to to it but my computer skills are very limited.

I have a '12 Fote for work. had used what ever the lube place I use had. after reading the TSB bought a bunch from the dealer, they weren't outrageously priced ~$6 each. its a solid nice filter for the price. the ticking at start up I have everyday though. no difference if its warm or cold.
UOA's are coming back clean so I'll keep doing what I'm doing.

So it's ticking with the OEM filter?

So your having ticking at start up with OEM filters? What oil?

I run the OEM Hyundai filter in my '07 4cyl Sonata...I do 5,000 mi per year and change oil twice on 1 filter, oil is always clean...The OEM filters are VERY GOOD QUALITY.....never had any issues...use them with confidence....engine is always quiet...I run any 5-30 on sale at 6 mo intervals....ps - the 2.4 is a pretty tough motor from my experience....

Use the KIA OEM most of the time, but services that consist of just an oil change and tire rotation I do elsewhere. Dealer charges $40 for dino and tire rotation.

Went with Firestone, can live with their house brand oil filter since I change it and the oil every 5k. $21.99 with Kendall GT1 semi-syn.

No idea who makes their oil filters.

From what I just got as answers, looks like good chance of getting an ecore filter

For those touting the OEM filters by Hyundai and Kia, you realize they are manufactured by Asian companies like Nippon, Denso and Union? So naturally I won't use a $3 USA made filter in my Elantra, but I feel I can use any of the three mentioned above, as well as Wix, Purolator, Mann USA, Baldwin and Hastings, with full confidence. Kia's tech bulletin is a vehicle to weasle out of warranty claims.

Not taking a stand on this one way or another but in the course of other research I ran across this in a technical bulletin, perportedly from Champion Laboratories You may find it of interest. It says:

"Subject: Hyundai Engine Knock Date: May 2006 Number: STB01-06

Hyundai Technical Service Bulletin number 05-20-002, dated July 2005, indicates that some Hyundai vehicles might experience an engine knock noise, when an aftermarket oil filter is used. According to the Hyundai bulletin, due to differences in materials, construction and performance specifications, aftermarket oil filters can cause “pressure variations within the engine thus contributing to an engine knocking noise”. The implication is that only a genuine Hyundai oil filter will prevent the engine noise.

Champion Laboratories, Inc. has performed an in-depth construction analysis of the Hyundai original equipment oil filter number 26300-35502 and a battery of laboratory comparative performance tests in an effort to determine the basis for the Hyundai bulletin. Testing and examination found that the design and materials used in the construction of the Hyundai original equipment oil filter are not unique. In addition, a comparative analysis of the three critical performance areas, hot oil flow resistance, cold oil flow resistance and anti-drainback valve leakage, indicates that the Service Champ OF-4459 oil filter performs equal to or better than the Hyundai oil filter. Complete test results are available upon request.

Our conclusion is that the Service Champ OF-4459 will satisfy all Hyundai original equipment oil filter requirements for fit and function. There was no evidence found to suggest that the Service Champ oil filter would be responsible for an engine knocking noise, when used on Hyundai engines."
