Curious oil recommendations.

5W-20 GF3 on the oil cap under the hood. Owner's guide states 5W20 SL or later. Orrrr, above 7 degrees Centigrade, you can use 5W30, 5W40, 10W30, 15W40, or 20W50, and any of those from SJ, SL, GF3. They do not spec oil rated rated later than GF3. Nor is there ANY mention of API SM.

That tells me Hyundai prefers a little zinc in this thing..

This is a 2007 3.3 V-6 Hyundai.

You could assume a lot about what it means, however, I don't think it means they prefer more ZDDP.

I would start out with any SM 5w-20 and do a used oil analysis on it using Terry Dyson. Take it from there.....

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w-20/Amsoil 0w-20/Red Line 5w-20 would be great choices for this car. That V6 is fast if it's the one I have driven before. G/F had to rent a car and they gave her a V6 Elantra or Sonata (can't remember).

*Regardless, SM oils are superior to SL so it's really not an issue.

No, Isuzu spec's those grades too; they too only state SF-SL oils

Use Motorcraft 5w20 Synthetic Blend! It's a great oil and inexpensive at Wal-Mart. That is if you are looking for an oil.

2007 Subaru 2.5 H4 USA has that you can use 30*, 40*, 10w-50*, 20-40w*, 20w-50*, 10w-40 , 10w30 and 5w30 with 5w30 being preferred.

* is if the vehicle is used in the desert areas, in area with very high temps, or used in towing a trailer.

This is a non turbo engine BTW.

API SL means nothing but they are lazy or don't want to limit their customer's buying options. My 2006 Mazda6 lists API SL as the minimum, but the 2007s now list API SM as the minimum. Auto makers probably wait so many years before spec'ing the latest API because not everyone can find SM in a bind right off the bat.

I have a 2007 Santa Fe with the 3.3 Liter Engine too. At 4000 miles changed out the oil filter and factory fill with Motorcraft 5w20 Synthetic Blend! Got it at Wal-Mart. It takes 5.5 quarts.

I just bought enough 5W20 Havoline Synthetic at Big Lots on sale that will last both the Santa Fe and the wife's Hyundai Tucson 2.7 Liter for a few years.

Even though I live in the southeast where we have high temperatures during the summer months and mild winters, plan on using nothing but 5W20 oil in both vehicles!

interesting oil recommendations. probably reason why I hear old timers running 20w-50 in their engines still getting 150k+ GM engines
