Hello BITOG, my first post here since last time I bought a car.
As the title says, I'm trying to decide on an oil for my 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe. I just bought it off my father in law, so I have an idea of the maintenance it has gotten. Cheap, but regular and probably on schedule. Likely on the old 3K schedule. His oil was Super Tech 5W-30. I saw the sticky, so I'll answer the rest of the questions in sequence.

2. The manual specifies 5W-20 or 30 as an option. It says ILSAC-GF3, but I'm guessing that is an old enough standard now that pretty much everything will hit it.
3. Like in Milwaukee, WI
4. We pretty much drive easily, maybe up to moderate, but we're definitely not hard drivers.
5. Most of the car's usage will be around town, mix of city and suburb. A couple of times a year we drive to NC and back.
6. No known problems. It has about 107K on it.

On my two previous vehicles (both Hondas) I've been using Mobil 1 0-20, because when I bought them I found BITOG and convinced myself that it would be the right choice. In something like this, I don't really want to experiment, I just like to pick something and stick with it, not thinking about it again unless something comes up. I'd like to do the same here (although now that I'm in the think-about-it mode, I may be back later with a thread for my civic). I prefer a longer OCI, and so have a preference for synthetics. I don't want to spend a lot--this is not a high performance car--but I'm willing to spend what I need to for proper protection. I expect to just use the OEM Hyundai filter, because some reading I've done suggests that others frequently have "fit" issues. I'm convincible not to do this, but at the moment that's what I intend if it matters for oil choice.

So, should I just keep picking up Mobil 1 or should I switch to something else. Any reason not to go with 0W even thought the manual says 5? 20 vs 30?

Let me know if I left anythign out, or if there is other information that would be useful. I appreciate the help!

use what the manual says in weight,,u most likely will get a 1000 different opinons with your question,,,,really any brand name oil will work...Shell,Mobil One,Texaco,\Quaker State, Napa, and so on...

Pick a major name brand oil with the proper specs and there you go . Seems the oil being used now works just fine. Oil these days, not much difference.

My 04 hyundai with a 2.7 ran QSGB 5w30 5k OCI now with 275 K miles Hyundai's are not picky on oil just change it regularly with a quality brand

Santa Fe is a good vehicle

Run 0w-30 all year. No reason to swap this isn't the 1960's anymore.

Is 30 going to give me better protection than 20? The manual claims that 20 is preferred, but I expect that may just be CAFE.

Depends on the temperates you see..

Truth is most bulk oils are not what is specifiedin most owners manuals but never cause any problems so use what you want and sleep well.

Did 5w30 in my wife's 2003 for 10 years. Mostly qsud, pyb, or pennzoil platinum. Did qs defy and pennzoil hm once it went over 100k

My DD a 2.4L 2010 Hyundai has 5w-20 on the fill cap and book recommends QS. So I been running 5w-30 PYB.
116k on the clock, 5k OCIs. Uses less than 1/4qt during the 5k. Always using OEM filters (there was a TSB on non-OEM filters but don't know if it applied to me).
Earlier on the clock I did run some Kendall but went back to PYB after using that case up.
Book did show other grades but don't recall those - usually a little heavier can be used for higher temps, towing or something. I don't worry about going below the 5w with the California weather here where I'm at.

Im assuming that is the 3.3 v6 am i correct?

If so Mobil 1 or Mobil super high mileage is a great choice. I have a 2011 with the 3.5 v6 and i am using Mobil 1 5w30 runs perfect always.
I used to use QSUD and that was ok also..

Yep, the 3.3 V6. Thanks for all the recommendations. I'll be giving the Mobil 1 a try in this car, since it has served just fine in others. If I have any issues, I guess I'll poke around through some of the other similarly priced synthetics.
