I first started seeing this about two years ago in Toronto. It was a Hyundai Veloster, but the owner had replaced the Hyundai badges with something that in no way would indicate the car is a Hyundai.

Recently, even around town here, I'm seeing the same thing on a number of them. Folks swapping out their Hyundai badges for aftermarket pieces that seem to cater to this phenomenon making the cars less likely to be identified as a Hyundai and rather beg the question "what car is that?".

This runs rather counter to the usual identification of "coveted" badges like the running horse for the Mustang, the Mercedes logo, the VW logo, BMW's roundel...etc.

Is this an embarrassment thing? A conversation starter? Anybody care to enlighten me?

Can I get some Maybach badges for a Smart Car? Back when the Ruskies were importing Russian built Fiats into Canada under the Lauda brand, US gas stations in Maine, NH, and Vermont were refusing to sell them fuel. The owners bought FIAT stickers to replace the Lauda markers and were OK. The Russian version of the Fiat was a good cold weather car.

I've seen this with the tuner crowd uh...youngsters...and it doesn't just involve Hyundai. I've seen it on older Japanese compact sport vehicles where they've removed the badges and/or kept part of the logo ( left Toy instead of the full Toyota name, etc. ). I would assume it's related to that and to the square root of "hip"...

I own a late model Hyundai and I'm aware of kids who plasti-dip the rear diffuser and put on an aftermarket grille without the logo in front. I believe this is done because the logo in the grille is the only chrome accented part of the car and they want to make it look like a cartoon so they make everything black from the windows to the wheels and those uncool badges and logos gotta go...knowwhatimsayin' yo??

Rear steer? (is that the front or the back?)

I haven't really noticed this in my neck of the woods.

The only car I've really seen this on was one of the neigbors; he has a Scion BRZ and replaced the rear Scion logo with a Batman logo.

"Debadging" seems to be popular with the younger Jeep crowd also. I don't get it at all, although they usually just leave the Jeep devoid of all markings instead of putting other stuff on it.

Debadging, plasti-dipping over things, chrome removal, extended timeframe "primerizing", are all pretty common here among several brands so I have no idea where someone can have this as a "Hyundai thing".

I don't know about the Veloster, but having owned a Tiburon I know that it's quite popular to replace the "H" emblem with "Tuscani" emblems, as that's what the Tiburon is called in other countries. These are actually the OEM emblems used on the Tuscani rather than the "H" that's used here.

Maybe they bought the car for it's styling and 10 year/100,000mi warranty but don't want to be caught in the 90's stigma that Kia/H are lame cars (Kia Sephia.)

Agreed....pretty much crosses all the brands....

There is a Prius "Turbo" here at work. You have to look to notice it. Rest of car is stock, so I think is a simple laugh--but one has to be observant to notice.

True, but this is the very specific replacement of the brand badge with something else. It isn't that the badge or other identifiers are simply being removed, rather they are being swapped.

I have not observed this practice on any other marque.

I have seen a lot of Hyundai & Kia drivers install this badge.

Maybe this is what you saw? I have no idea what it's all about.

Germans debadge for two reasons, they are either embarrassed that their new 3 series is a 316i with M mirrors or its a big 750/760 and don't want to appear too affluent or the car is a 730 or 740 and he doesn't want people to know he bought the entry level car.
.
The owners manual even gives instructions on how to remove the badges.
Real M car drivers tend to leave them. I have a feeling Hyundai drivers are embarrassed.

Live in NYC, can confirm.

3/4 of the Tiburon's I see have the Tuscani treatment, same as BMW's done up to be Alpinas that aren't.

Seems people are starting to get around to "modifying" Genesii and Velosters now.

How bad has stancing gotten where you are?
