here in canada, its close to 14$ for a hyundai filter, i find it expensive, a lot of people say the fram orange can is a good choice for 3k miles oci, which is what i do.

I have a carquest filter, made by wix, and i dont think its a good choice, it ticks when cold.

is the orange can a good choice?

If you are doing only 3k OCIs then go with the orange can. You shouldn't have any problems.

As for the Hyundai filter, they were $8 back when I owned a 2010 Tucson, so I find $14 to be really pricey. Good filter though.

It may be worth the effort to get these shipped some way:

Hyundai has a TSB about substandard filters.

Go to Canadian Tire and get a Quaker State filter, they are in fact Purolator Classics, pretty decent filters for average OCI's, and price wise not too bad.

If not, sure, get an orange can, it will work for 5kKm just fine.

The orange can has better efficiency than most OEM oil filters.

I would not hesitate to use the orange can for the 5k intervals.

Its ok, your spared the torn media many have posted. My problem was threading the filter, wasn't a match. Hole was too big, threads were too few. Stay away from the walmart classic.

I suspect that the Hyundai filter will be fine for many more than 3000 miles, I would think it would be good enough for up to 10k.

Why not move to full synthetic and run it the life of the filter, call it 9k to keep things in line with you previous 3k interval.

Or perhaps run the Hyundai filter for two 3k OCI's.

I know that in the UK there isn't much around for Hyundais as car as oil filters goes.

It was cheaper to get them from the Hyundai dealer. As the aftermarket ones were also imported so not cheap.

I was unable to find a Bosch, Mann or Hengst for my wife's Hyundai.

But if you can run the filter 2 OCI's then that pulls the price down to $7 a change.

I would have no issues running an OE Hyundai filter for 2x3000 mile oil changes.

I don't fully understand Hyundai's TSB recommending using only their brand oil filter...are all oil filters other than Hyundai OEM oil filters flawed, or is the design of Hyundai vehicles flawed. If I use a Purolator oil filter instead of a Hyundai OEM filter in my new Sonata, is the engine going to blow and me getting stuck with a non warranteed financial mess.

Older TSB was kvetching about cheap filters without the anti-drainback valve. New TSB is boilerplate to make you buy oem. Apparently the OEM filter is made in Korea by Dongwoo, which in 2002:

Joint Venture DongWoo MANN+HUMMEL Co. Ltd. is set up in South Korea (100% takeover in 2008)

and in 2008:

100% takeover of the Korean filter specialist Dongwoo Co. Ltd. and name change to MANN+HUMMEL Dongwoo Co. Ltd.

Quotes are directly from Mann's website on company history.

Looks like the OEM oil filter is made by Mann and thus would explain it's quality build.

The TSB in question is 05-20-002, issued in July, 2005, titled "USE OF AFTERMARKET ENGINE OIL FILTERS CAUSING ENGINE KNOCKING NOISE", with an applicability of "ALL MODELS".

Here is the text of the TSB:
Quote:
DESCRIPTION:
Some vehicles may experience an engine knock noise with the use of an aftermarket oil filter. Aftermarket oil filters may use different materials, construction and specifications than genuine Hyundai oil filters, which may lead to pressure variations within the engine, thus contributing to an engine knocking noise.

VEHICLES AFFECTED:
All Models

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
Perform an oil change on the vehicle and replace the aftermarket oil filter with a genuine Hyundai oil filter.

WARRANTY INFORMATION:
Normal warranty procedures apply. This is not a warranty repair.

I've used hyundai (FF) P1, Fram Extended Guard, MicroGreen and have K&N and M1 on deck. I've had no, and anticipate no problems at all.
