Does anyone know who makes Hyundai OEM oil filters? I'll probably pick one up today for an oil change this weekend, but I wanted to see if anyone knew who manufactured them.

There was some talk on here a while back.

Someone said that they look like they were designed by Mann, but they are made in Korea.

For the same price you can get a Wix, and it has the by-pass on the threaded end (OEM is on the closed end).

Who makes them? Who knows!

Yeh, I'm a big fan of Wix and will probably go that route in the future. However, I was already at the dealer today buying the crushable washers, Hyundai tranny fluid, and an air filter. So, I went ahead and got an oil filter so I could check it out. Seems solid and well made, but who knows about the internals. It should be good, but for $5 I can probably get better (like Wix/Napa Gold).

If you do a search in this forum, there are some pics of a Hyundai filter cut open.

They are a very solid little filter, but for the same price you can go Wix and get a better by-pass (IMO) and silicon ADBV.

The Hyundai filter is a pretty hefty filter. I use the Hyundai one's on my Elantra (7500 mile OCI) and Bosch and STP (same Champion filter) on my Tucson (5000 mile/ 6 month OCI). I looked into the Super Tech, but it is way smaller than the OEM, even the oversized ST is smaller than OEM. I may eventualy go to Wix on the Elantra, I have always liked them.

Here are some pics of a Hyundai filter I cut open with only 1000 miles on it.

I have one with 7400 miles on it I will be cutting open this weekend once all the oil drains out.

Also, I got a Wix air filter for my Elantra for $10 @ O'Reily, compared to $20 for the OEM filter. Looks identical to the OEM, even made in Korea.

This was the filter that came with the car new. I always do a 1000 mile initial change on my new cars. I just cut it open to see what the filter itself looked like, and it will give me something to compare the 7400 mile one to. Should have been a bit clearer on that, sorry.

I have a '02 Elantra with 28,000 miles. I Just bought a couple of filters at the dealer at $5.95 each. Last year I needed to change the oil on a Sunday and ran out and bought a Fram. The diameter was about an inch less and really flimsy compared to the OEM filter and cost nearly as much. Thanks to Blupupher for cutting open the OEM filter. I won't buy the Fram again, I should have know better. For $5.95 the Hyundai filter seems to be a pretty good deal considering the quality.
Has anyone found an aftermarket filter as good as the OEM for less?

Oh, ok then I see. I did the same thing with my both my vehicles, changed the oil at around 1300-1500 miles. But I wasn't a member of this forum back then so I didn't know anything about (or ever thought about) cutting open old filters...

I can't answer that in regards to Hyundai filters, but, I used to think that OEM stuff was cheap and just good enuff to get by. But since joining this forum my mentality on that has done a complete 180. I would not hesitate in the slightest to get an AC Delco filter or Motorcraft filter for my Grand Am and Explorer, respectively.

Here are some comparison pics of the ST filter (6607, recomended per book, same size as the Fram) and a OEM.

And the ST listed (6607), the oversize ST (7317), Stock Hyundai, and recommended Champion (3312, same size as the STP 2808 I have)

Sorry for the crappy pics, these were taken with my camera phone. I ned to re-do these with my good one. I will probably cut the 6607 open and see the internal, it is a non-e-core BTW. I am going to use the oversize ST and the Bosch on my Tucson.

bighead,
Up till a year or so ago, I would have never thought of cutting a filter open either. This was actualy the first one I cut open, the secone one being a Wix I had on my Jeep. Just something to kill time I guess.

Here it is. 7410 miles on it with GC, about 4-5 months, on the right, 1000 miles on factory fill on left. I will cut the media off once a little more oil drains off the media. It looks good, darker than the 1000 mile one, but that is expected. The media is all intact and feels plenty strong. The only thing I noticed it that the ADBV is just slightly firmer than the 1000 mile one, but still flexable (not that it really matters, the filter is almost verticle on the bottom front of the engine).
