I'm getting ready to change a radiator hose that has been weeping lightly since it was replaced last time. In case the fault is the radiator inlet and not the hose, I want to try something like the Hylomar sealant that Trav often recommends here.

Is Permatex 85420 "Permashield Fuel Resistant Gasket Dressing and Flange Sealant" equivalent to Hylomar? It's a non-hardening polyester urethane based product that is available locally.

Permatex 85420 Information

Thanks in advance.

Permatex Aviation #3 will seal hoses. Permatex #2 will seal hoses too. All the auto parts stores should have either one in stock.

All NAPA stores, and most O'reillys, have it

I have used Ultra silicone sealer, but I don't recommend it over Hylomar

Permatex Aviation Forma gasket in the tube. IIRC, its #2 . I use it when ever I have to R+R a coolant hose. Makes corroded fittings act like new again. Non hardening so it will come loose without drama

I have never used it so I cant say 100% but it sounds like it. Permatex did make a licensed Hylomar a few years ago. I would say go for it if you cant wait for the real deal.

Thanks everybody.

I think I just answered my question. I tried to search for Hylomar a little harder on the NAPA website, with no results. But their listing for the Permatex product shows a photo of the package, and it says "Compare to Hylomar Universal Blue." The Permatex page shows the same thing, but I missed it the first time around.

I have to get some and do a side by side comparison. I really like the Hylomar and rarely buy silicone anymore, when It is a must then its the smallest tube they sell and I toss it after using it because the next time I go to use it it will be hard and in the bin she goes anyway.
The one silicone I use quite a bit is the flowable clear, its the best there is for windshields, brake light housings, headlight housings, etc that are leaking.

Unless this is a beater and want a band aid fix, why not repair the cause of the leak. Not familiar with that product but imagine any chemical in contact with the rubber hose could cause it to deteriorate and leak even more.

Harmless to rubber, gaskets, metals and anything else you can think of. There is nothing better for preventing leaks in plastic and pitted aluminum water necks.

Is Valco Cincinnati just licensing the Hylomar product to sale here in the US? Just want to make sure I am buying the real Hylomar product.

From what I read, the product that Valco is selling is the commercial version of the aviation formula.
