My Husqvarna weedwacker starts perfect (first pull, every time) and runs well. Today I was using it, and encountered something I haven't before.

-Still starts perfect on the first pull
-Still runs perfect after that pull, for a couple minutes
-After a few minutes, without fail, it randomly starts to bog down. It is tough then to get off idle, and even if I can get it back to WOT, it eventually bogs down to stop running.

Pulling the rope after it boggs like that does not work. I MUST reprime the carb by pumping the bulb. Then, it starts first pull, runs great for a few minutes, and this happens again. It runs marginally longer if I just keep it at WOT forever, but that's just not a practical scenario.

If it just plain didn't start or run right, Id think that the carb had an issue or something. In this case, it runs perfect as it ever has, until it boggs, and then after priming, it again runs perfect as it ever has.

So... That makes me think that perhaps it is something heat-soak or heat related. It obviously gets air, fuel and spark. It starts and runs great.

Recommendations? I was thinking of adjusting the high side carb screw a bit, but not sure if that's prudent, since it runs great for a few minutes...

Thanks!

That certainly is odd. How old is the weedwhacker and estimated hours?

It sounds like it may be slowly getting starved of fuel. Fuel filter?

Pour a table spoon or two of berrymans b12 Chem tool in the fuel tank and run a while. Also check the strainer in the tank and check/clean the fuel hose of obstructions

My buddies chainsaw did the same while I was using it. Something to try is when it bogs down or when you restart keep pushing the priming bulb. If it continues to run (like the chainsaw did) that I believe indicates a cracked vacuum line that would expand when hot allowing it to lose vacuum and run out of fuel. The chainsaw ended up needing a new line and carburetor rebuild due to ethanol corrosion.

10 years old. Maybe 250 hours?

So, fuel lines are all great (they're recent as the old ones had cracked and were leaky), filter looks clean...

Added the B12 (didn't know if that was an OK thing to do - Ive used it in 4 stroke stuff but not in 2), pumped the primer a bunch then ran it. Started first pull, ran stronger, and didn't bog down.

Looks like it is solved. Thanks!!

You mean it has adjustable mixture screws ? Both high and low ?

If u can do it yourself this may be a good idea.

I have an old 125L that is a brute for not as powerful as a full scale commercial use, but decent to medium/large property.

In 2010 I had to replace the carb, took it to a mom and pop dealer to fix. I knew it was an ethanol issue. Thanks Obama to "create jobs" 😡... But that was the last time those years back I had to change carb out. Then a few years later I was storing wrong in a closed outside shed and I knew it was totally a f up of mine. Switched just the fuel lines and got a new weighted fuel filter and stuck with the fresh gas no more than a months worth and used only gray bottle one gal mix of Stihl ultra. Of course, I added my personal favorite the Marine 360 Sta-Bil and hadn't had any problems after that fix.

Then just the other week maybe two and half weeks ago I tried to change the filter without taking the whole fuel lines through the opening to carb, but through the gas fill and undoubtly got whatever speck that let the carb prime to get gas and crank then a minute later shutoff.

This is the great ending less than $30 buck carb for that exact model through E replacement parts.com ... I have had no problems with it and hopefully no problems for 2yrs or more.

The main trick I have asked at a great Stihl dealer which was great advice for my Stihl chainsaw was to get just what you think what you would need for that month and add the right air cooled 2stroke oil, not the 2stroke mixing oil that some companies swear that the oil they sell to the public is both good for air cooled power equipment and water cooled outboards is good for both worlds. It is not.

As for access to the right fuel if you can 89 octane 100% non ethanol gas is your best bet. Before the adminstration decided heck let's put stuff in our gas "to mislead the majority of the pop" that this 10--15% is the bees knees for autos and EVERYTHING else we want in the mechanic shops due to lack of storing out equipment correctly since the f up.

I know I am carrying on, but what great owner of the Stihl dealer's mechanic said to me was that pumps at stations aren't always accurate on gallons despensed. So for that reason it's best to put a little less i.e. .9 gal of fuel to the 2.6 fl oz of oil mix for that gallon of fuel.

Then when you add the oil just add it to the container you have been using during the fueling, not before the tank is nearly empty because it will not mix as good then top off how much gas you want. Maybe a dumb thing to point out, but some people do not that.

This is how I screwed up a great pruning saw that I knew better but the non ethanol station was too far to drive to get the non ethanol gas. I mistakenly used some 50:1 gas that had been setting up for two months, with StaBil and used the chainsaw for two tankfuls 'til I had it act up. I took the chainsaw in and took muffler off. I saw that I scored the piston and for what it would cost to replace. I just bought an identical saw. My regret there was that I wanted the MS250 which went on sale from Oct to November last year til supplies last for $299. When that saw I really wanted was out of my budget at the time because it was $375 after taxes at the time a year and half before.

Last 2cents

I would highly recommend spending the extra dough for a husqvarna or Stihl ( red max isn't bad either) so before even ever considering any of the less popular brands.

Sorry to those that sell those other brands.

Have a great 4th and stay safe and stay off your phone while driving any during all the traffic on the road!!

I would have guessed a plugged fuel tank cap vent or cracked fuel line for the OPs issues.

Like the above post, I too have a 125L that's always run like a top for me since I dialed in the H and L settings on the carb with a cheap eBay tool for Husq/Poulan machines.

My carb has adjustment screws, they are capped off, but I believe the caps can be removed by a number of methods.

As for ethanol, I've only ever bought about 2.5 gal of mower gas and 1 gal of 89 for the 2 stroke mix, at a time. There's a gas station within a pleasant walking distance away, and the 2 cycle things are efficient enough that I've only had to buy a few gallons a year. I did this on purpose to keep fresh fuel, and still, added stabilizer. I've never had any problems other than leaking fuel lines.

Now I have a monster Husqvarna 570BFS backpack leaf blower. To do my yard just after a mow (not leaves in the fall) will take over half its tank, which I think is nearly a gallon (may be wrong, only used it a few times), so I'll likely up my 2 cycle gas storage... At least unmixed.

What kind of oil are you using? My last weedeater did the same thing. I bought a new one, bought some Pro-mix oil from Lowes - the kind that says one bottle for all ratios, and the new one ran the exact same way out of the box. Frustrated, I bought some Tru Fuel, just to see how it ran and possibly eliminate a factor. It ran like a dream. I think it must have been the oil, and the engine not liking the universal ratio it mixed up. I never imagined an oil could cause such performance issues, but it did. Just tossing it out there in case that is what you're using.

That's why I am like most of dislike these 8yrs.

Ethanol at 10-15% makes everything mess up if not stored among all the jobs this administration thought to help the economy.

Mechanics in various fields HATE having to deal with [censored] fuel problems BUT... It does help their paycheck and bills. But some good friends of mine hate the busy work of dealing with it. So when the greedy mechanics think this ethanol is f awesome ... Bad.
I guess you like the democrat thought?? Huh?
Gun sales sky rocketed, too.
Nobody will mess with the USA. Right?

Weedeater carb. My issue was that I couldn't get the fuel filter the way I thought. And any flake of anything could have indeed plugged it.. When I had to wait for the carb which was which delivery.

Ethanol = fail!
Other = failed
God help us this November and next Spring.

So was cash for clunkers.
Car payment, tag, and insurance ??? [censored]

We all are suffering enough.

=-)

I typically run Mobil 1 racing 2T, but have run stihl oil too.

I am on my 2nd qt of universal mix. I mix an oily 32:1 with 93 octane. 2 strokes are rated for 50:1. I add a capful of MMO to the tanks. So far, so good. I did have to clean the Zama's needle valve to get the Mantis going. With a new carb, the Husqavarna 322L needs a bit of choke to idle. Weeds don't stop growing. I am using it as is. I'll fix it right come fall.

Ugh, it came back again...

Need to look into fuel filter and lines as well as vent.

E10 has been around in my parts prior to this administration... FYI. E10 can cause problems, but I haven't run into any in all the years here. Personally its not really a big deal. If things get stored, then either purge with canned "premix" or treat the fuel (I like Stabil Marine).
