Whenever I'm driving on the city streets, I'm always getting passed up by people who are desperate to get to the red light before I do. They don't mind waiting at the red light, but don't you dare get in their way on the way to the red light. I don't see the point, are people really that dumb that they think the light is gonna be green when they get there?

They're not dumb overall, just dumb when it comes to traffic, cars, physics, gasoline, money, safety and time.

Actually some people like red lights because they can pay more attention to their phones.

Some people don't think ahead. They just need to get there as fast as they can. [censored] half of them probably don't even realize the light is red till they come upon the stopped cars and slam on the brakes.

Ha! Both points are so true. Maybe they rush to stop at the next red light to finish their turn on Words With Friends.

Hehehe. Some people believe that driving like that will get them to their destination so much faster, when the truth of the matter is they might save a couple of minutes.
The best is watching guys weave in and out of traffic, while I idle and they sit at that red light for 2 minutes, and I idle past them, not once touching my brakes or hammering the gas.
Traffic is traffic. Its pointless getting angry or driving like an idiot. Leave earlier if traffic is anticipated or leave later, after the traffic rush.
For example. When we are working in willow grove and quit at 5 once you factor in traffic I'd get home at 6:10.
If we work til 6 the traffic rush is done and I get home at 6:20. So we work the extra hour and make money and once its all said and done it costs less in gas and frustration, and make it in the house 10 minutes later, and we get an extra 10 hours a payroll.

+1 I had the same commute once.

So much judgment in this thread...

In traffic, how fast you reach your destination depends not on how fast you go, but on how many cars there are in front of you. If you reach a light ahead of other cars, you have your choice of lanes for the next block, which means you have a better chance of getting and staying ahead of other cars. I'm sure most people aren't thinking in those terms, but it IS possible to make progress that way.

When you consider the risk, bad vibes, and fuel involved, it's almost never worth it. However, to say there's no point is a bit simplistic.

In Philadelphia, there are two big one-way roads where the lights are timed so that it's possible to drive at a nearly-constant 25 MPH and hit nothing but green lights. When I drive on those roads, it's usually to get from one side of the city to the other. When there's traffic, I can cut up to a minute off my point-to-point by driving aggressively. Again, completely not worth it 99% of the time, so I don't really do it any more. However, if I had a legitimate emergency or something, I'd certainly consider it.

In other parts of PA where I drive regularly, there are long stretches of two-lane roads that eventually narrow down to one-lane roads. I "hurry up and wait" there all the time to minimize the number of cars ahead of me by the time the road narrows. I do this because getting stuck behind someone doing 10 under the limit is fantastically annoying.

FWIW.

They are also the ones that complain about poor gas mileage and tires and brakes that last a year at most.

It takes them just as long as it takes me when I'm timing the stoplight. The only difference is I use 1/2 the gas, tires and brakes.

Judgement is dished out on BITOG in spades...

This situation works both ways. As many times as you are caught by a red light by driving faster than others, you'll find that you will sometimes catch the tail end of a green light and don't have to wait at the intersection like all of those folks you just passed. I don't drive this way, and indeed sometimes get a laugh out of someone who just had to get in front of me and is waiting at the same light. But still...are we really calling these people "dumb"?

Just remember we're all the "dumb ones" to someone else...

It's simply a matter of scale.

Are you the dumb one to 99 out of every 100 or 1 out of every 100.

We were explaining the standard distribution to my young daughter who is looking forward to honors classes in high school so she doesn't' have to deal with as many idiots in school, (her words.)

We explained to her that for most folks, there will always be some number of "idiots" who lie well below her on the intelligence scale. But even if she's a 99 percentile child, there will be someone to whom her intelligence is inferior.

Also explained that getting upset "the idiots" really doesn't make her life any better. But what might is by helping out those who want help.

In other words, show some grace and compassion for others.

I laugh because people pass me when there is traffic or multiple street lights to be ahead of me by one car length...people are so impatient yet they never get further ahead. I just coast up on them a few seconds later. Sometimes i wana get out of my car at a light, walk up to their car and give them an applause..LOL.

In the city the thing I see most is people rushing to speed away from a red light when it turns green. Not rolling as he light goes green? Honk..

Is in the countryside and sprawl areas especially here traffic patterns are poor and lights not timed that I see he worst cases of speeding to catch a red light.

I think I'm guilty of doing it both ways. I've passed people on the highway only to hit the brakes at an exit. Why? Just didn't feel like following someone for the last mile--just spent an hour (or three) going faster and didn't feel like waiting a few more seconds. The times where I've tried to slow down and not pass I usually wind up tailgating.

I've also done the gentle driving thing. Saves fuel, but have to have the mindset for it.

Which is probably the crux of it. When I drive fast, I accept that I will burn lots of fuel. When I drive slow, I accept that I'll get passed. When I get home, I forget about the drive and get on with life. I'm not driving to impress anyone, just going from point a to point b.

The hour travel reduced to 15 mins if you wait slightly past rush hour is a very common occurrence in Montreal for many travelers.

We have many off-islanders that clog up the city then when they are back in Laval, Dorion, Ile Perrot, etc. all the traveling for everyone that lives in the city is 15-20 mins in distance at most.

But, they don't want to throw up toll bridges for these people.

They tear up the roads and increase everyone's traveling demands and don't pay a cent in Montreal taxes. It is very unfair.

They even wait until they are off-island to fill up on gas, as, it is a few cents a liter cheaper for them.

So all the salt and sand that gets kicked off the road, and accidents, all comes out of Montreal resident's pockets.

And these people from Laval especially are the RUDEST drivers ever, speed, cut you off, tail gate you to a stop light, and text on their phones like mad.

You live in Fresno...move to Los Angeles where it takes an hour to get to the red light..

Here in IL the number of "me first" drivers is nothing short of astounding. I'm not exaggerating when I say almost all of the drivers here find it necessary to drive 15-20 MPH over the limit and they have to get in front of every other driver on the road. If they can't get in front you, they tailgate you. As if this isn't bad enough, most of these people are texting or yacking on a cell phone while they're driving. They have laws here that forbid the use of hand-held cell phones while driving, but of course, no one pays any attention to the law and it isn't enforced. What's the sense of having laws if they aren't going to be enforced?

This is a slight twist to the subject, but I spend a lot of time driving on the freeways here and something needs to be done about the semi drivers. I don't like to rag on truckers because I know they have a tough job and all, but there are so many trucks on the roads these days, you can't go anywhere without being held up by them. To make matters worse, there are way too many truckers on 4 lane highways camped out in the left lane. They swing over into the left to overtake other semis, and they will sometimes stay there to overtake several semis at a time. This can take anywhere from 5 to 10 mins, and they don't seem to care how many cars they're holding up to make these passes. I have seen as many 15-20 cars being held up by these idiots at a time. The cops need to start ticketing these guys for impeding traffic flow. They should only be overtaking other semis when they can do so without holding up traffic.

In my little corner of the world, the traffic lights have been receiving the countdown timer for the pedestrians to know when the light will be changing to yellow. I've immediately used it to know exactly when the light will be changing to yellow, so I can determine ahead of the intersection if I will be able to get through it or not safely.

I think this would be a great thing to add to every traffic light so we would all know when the light would be changing.
