AFE 0w30 3.0
Reg 5w30 3.1

On the bottle of each, where M1 compares it's oils, the AFE 0w30 shows as the "better oil for extreme heat"

Also,
Per their oil selector, the recommendations for my turbo are 5w30 > 0w30 or 10w30.
The 2.4? 5w20 > 5w30 or 10w30.

What is it about AFE that protects better in extreme heat situations?

My guess would be the 0W has better base stocks to meet the 0W requirements which increases high heat endurance (and low temp performance as well).

I think it's marketting fluff, and doesn't hold water.

IF the 0W30 had a higher VI than the 5W30, you could claim that the KV is higher at higher temperatures than the 5W30, and maybe by inference that at REALLY high temps, the HTHS might sneak over the 5W30.

But those two oils the claim doesn't stand up with KV40, KV100, HTHS, and VI.

With the numbers so close, i didn't think there would be a discernable difference either. But like synthetic_crazy posted, i wondered.

Yes we know that the 5w30 is GP III based and AFE has a significant PAO content to achieve it's very low MRV spec'.
But then M1 5w30 has been the spec oil for GM's
high performance engines Corvette, Cadllac V engines, etc) for years.

A track buddy of mine who routinely used various
OTC 5W-3Os including M1, tried AFE 0w30 for winter use and I asked him if he noticed any oil pressure differences either on start-up or once up to temperature and his response was not that he could tell, meaning AFE wasn't noticeably lighter.
.
For a Florida climate I'd say either oil exceeds
the high temp' viscosity requirements for your engine and would choose whichever is cheapest on
sale.

Just wondering if (AW)additive package in AFE 0w30 3.0 is offering

superior performance than that of Reg 5w30 3.1 ?

Molakule may be able to offer some insights .

0W30 AFE is good stuff-but if you run a long OCI in an engine known for shearing, watch out for it shearing down into a 20 grade (it did it on my xB in 7K, 5W30 EP makes it to 10K fine).

The AFE 0w30 would be for the 2.0T which has a max oci limit of 5k miles (Owner's Manual normal service max). The Santa Fe Sport 2.0T, incidentally, is the only Hyundai with this engine that does not list an Xw40 as an option, only 5w or 10w30, for which Mobil1 also recomends and warranties the use of its AFE 0w30. The M1 5w30 is for use in the 2.4 Sonata.

I always thought Asian turbo generally requires xW40 in tropics.

What am I missing here ?

First time I've ever heard of this 'requirement'. My past turbos always recommended 5w30.

WRX
Mazdaspeed Protoge'
Mitsubishi Evolution
Current 2.0T

Thanks for the heads up , Fl is quite hot though.

It can be, for approximately 3 months out of the year when temps hover in the mid to upper 90s. Nothing any modern day motor oil can't cope with though. It's not Death Valley, the Amazon or the Middle East.
