HP Oil as an additive

So, both of my vehicles are old. The car is 13 years old. The truck, 23. So, I'm not really into spending a ton of cash on an OC for either. But I'd like to get the most protection for my car that I can. I'm specifically talking about the Nissan Altima and the KA24DE engine that I love.

So, here are my three options:
1.) Continue to run Valvoline 5w30 in her as I have (4k OCI's)
or, in an effort to increase protection, and possibly OCI's...
2.) Add a can of LubroMoly MOS2 to the crank every oil change, or a bottle of LubeGard Bio-Tech (which contains both organic Moly and a dash of Boron).
3.) Only at 2.6 quarts of Valvoline 5w30 and then mix in a quart of something potent. Like Redline or Mobil 1 Racing

Anyone got an opinions?

I already have several cans of MOS2 and Bio-Tech in the garage, and she is getting an oil change in the next day or two. I haven't decided which way to go.

Any opinions or advice?

Why make is so complicated? Just change the oil when it needs to be changed and throw the fancy additive in the garbage...

You are using a quality oil. Continue. Leave the additives on the Walmart shelf. If you have money to burn, always better spent on better oil than additives. Maybe one notch up on the filter scale also.

13 Isn't that old. The average age of a vehicle in the U.S. is over 11 years old. I recently traded in a Mustang that was over 11 years old and in perfect condition (I couldn't get in and out anymore). Those Chevys go well over 200-250,000 miles, so it's not that old, mileage wise. Maybe Nissans don't age that well, but, I've never owned one. Save the additives till the engine is shot and needs a band aid.

But what about mixing in a quart of M1R or Redline....this would be spending my money on better oil, as Donald spoke of.

I know, in your mind it seems like your going to save the day with a custom blend of oil protection.

I know it's not what you want to hear, but the use of a quality oil, filter, and appropriate OCI are all you need.

I have the KA24DE in first generation Altima, 95. Sadly, it has had a tiny leak since the year 2000. I have to use high mileage oils to keep it at bay.

If I didn't have the tiny tiny leak, I would use Mobil 1 5w30 or something similar, like Pennzoil Platinum.

With the regular oil changes, the Valvoline conventional you're using should be ok.

I used Valvoline conventional in the first 5-6 years of my car and it's a bit dirty under the valve cover, but that was on 1995 era oil, so your Valvoline conventional has come from more modern times.

Still, I'm just an over-obsessed oil maniac, so again, without the tiny leak I would use some kind of synthetic. I wouldn't use an additive I put in myself because I simply don't believe in that unless in a particular problem situation, etc.

Do you service the transmission regularly? My transmission has some kind of problem now which really disappoints me. It may just be electronics or something, hope to have it looked at very soon. I had Mobil 1 ATF in it for several years now.

Add on, just recently replaced a bunch of parts on this car. Struts/springs and other suspension bits. I know yours is even newer and second gens did feel even better to drive (despite being mechanically very similar), but it's amazing how these cars were really slightly ahead of their time. They drive quite well! Mine has 135,000 miles. The tires were decently wide that helped.

I see no problem with your current routine. Valvoline is a decent oil and should be up to task of 4k OCI. It's fairly cheap, does a good job, and I've never seen Valvoline not offer good protection. The used oil analysis of it show that very well. Keep up what you're doing.

1/2 can is a better option.

I am. Sober almost 7 years now.
