My purolator pureone oil filter is leaking very little on the underside of the filter. Oil level still reads over 1/2 mark. It wasnt leaking after i did the oil change for about 1500 miles, but now it's visible. I notice slight rougher idling and poorer driving performance. im waiting for the weather to cooperate somewhat until i change it out. If i was to change it out in at another 1000 miles, would it be ok or should i be worried right now?

I once had a small leak like that. It turned out to be a speck of crud left on the filter mounting surface that kept the gasket from perfectly sealing.

I always clean the filter mounting surface almost to "perfection".... till every spot is dried, but i had two oil filter leaks already (one with wix and this pureone). I think im just that weak and can't even tighten the oil filter

. Maybe this time, i wont put oil on the oil filter gasket and tighten it a little bit more and see how that goes.

What kind of car.. You can just about overtighten it with your hands.

Most say +.75-1 turn after gasket hits the surface.
What are you using to clean if its some form of paper towel maybe its leaving debris (lint).
I had one leaky oil filter ever... It was one I didnt install.
I normally tighten 1-1.25 turns after gasket hits the surface.

Nissan titan, i normally do 3/4 turns after touching the surface. Even with 3/4 turns, i still tried to turn it even more but it always stuck at 3/4. I use a combo. of lint papers and a cloth towel to clean it. I'll try to see how it goes. Thanks for the comments.

Well it can't be the filter seam leaking since two filters in a row have done it and different brands. Possibly there is a nick in the gasket mounting surface?

That's my thought ..as unlikely as it is. 2 for 2 is a true oddity. If the next one does the same ..it's time for a trip to the dealer.

Maybe there is an old gasket, or part of one, fused to the sealing surface and it is being overlooked and under felt.

Thanks for all the inputs, ill look into the finer details when im under my truck soon for another filter switch. Im going to look for any signs of nick or scratch, etc. and see if i can reply with something.

-Pete c., the mounting surface is very well cleaned off whenever i put a new filter on there. I dont see any signs of remaining debris or parts from the old filter.

-Gary, nice to hear from ya again. If you're ever wondering about the oil pressure still, it's still the same even with the leaking on the pureone. As you remember from what i said earlier, wix/napa gold gives higher pressure from startup and during higher rpm. Even with the pureone leaking oil, it still stays at the middle mark during startup (even in a 30 F morning with ice and snow) and still doesnt bulge at much higher rpms.

Eric

An interesting event no matter how I spin it

Troubling (minor) situation with two leaking filters in a row. Then again, I've had about 3 bad thermostats that were bad from new ..so anything is possible

I find it interesting myself even though im a little worried of my current situation.

Im planning to change my oil in about 850 more miles and will reply with my observations of any abnormalities or nicks on the oil filter's mounting surface. Probably in 1-2 weeks from now.

Question: "If one were to overtighten an oil filter, could that possibly cause some leaks?" Im not really that strong, but i always try my hardest to tighten it till it doesnt move any further.

We were always trained to tighten "hand tight" ...back in the day. Apparently there was so much variance in what people considered "hand tight" that they started putting marks on the filters as guides for "contact point" and "final position". Quite often, I cannot reach the prescribed 3/4 rotation after gasket contact without a wrench. I do not bother.

I'm not positive, but I can't see you distorting the gasket in a manner that would allow it to leak with additional tightening ..expecially if you're doing it by hand. I imagine that if the can could get distorted something could occur ..but I've never seen this happen

The only trouble I've ever had is when the old gasket stayed on the mounting surface. I've had my Permacool mounts "weep" ..but never outright leak. I imagine that the machining is rough (but doesn't appear to be so

)

Don't sweat it. It will get fixed one way or another. I doesn't appear to be a critical leak, just annoying.

I hand-tighten until I can't turn it anymore with my bare hands - then grab the oil filter wrench & give it a hypothetical 12 AM to 3 AM turn with the wrench.

Never a leak - never have a problem removing it later.

The one time I had a leaking spin-on oil filter was the one time I got on it with an oil filter wrench during installation. I hand tighten only - and never to a degree that will require more than my own ability to remove by hand. The only reason I keep a strap filter wrench on hand is to remove the OEM filter on a new car that some assembly-line gorilla installed using both feet.

As did mine. I could never find the defect in the surface ...it never amounted to anything I could see over 12k or so ..but you could see the collection of dirt where it migrated. It was almost like diesel fuel fittings ..how they seem to leak no mater what you do

I often wondered if the casting was just that porous

A few times I had a accumulation of drops and I actually saw a drop or 2 on floor once. I check it every other day and so far just like you said the wetness is accumulating dust and dirt.

Porous...now that I didn't even ponder.
dunno.gif

Maye I should allow my oil to get dirty to clog those pores..

I can't really complain too much. I had cars with one filter that leaked from every gasket...

Here's my observations after switching out the leaking pureone with a new pureone. The current one hasnt leaked in about 100 miles... still waiting for more miles. The last filter, i filled the inside with oil at halfway and placed some oil around the gasket of the oil filter. OH by the way, i should of taken a picture of this but when i looked at the gasket of the old filter, it looked 'stripped'. It looks as though i overtightened it by hand or the gasket seemed to be torn from the inside? Im not sure if i can explain this in much greater detail due to my limited word skills, i wish i should of taken a pic! I really believed that i overtightened it by hand. I remember that once it stopped turning, i made a big extra effort to turn it to make sure there werent any more turns left. To my surprise, it did turn once more. This is probably why it leaked two times with the wix and this pureone? This time, i didnt add any drop of oil inside the filter and didnt place any dap of oil on the gasket. I didnt turn extra hard once it stopped turning. My mounting surface is slanted somewhat at a 45 degree angle. Ill check back in about several more thousand miles.

Thanks for the update, HR. It looks like the old Bullwinkle short "Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat! Whoops ..guess I don't know my own strength!"
