Just replaced my transfer case. What is the safest way to test if the 4x4 is engaging and more importantly, disengaging without the use of a lift?
98 expedition 5.4 if it matters for this question.

turn slower, tighter cirle OFF PAVEMENT and feel for the driveline binding up. it will resist at the steering wheel and feel sluggish to move. don't overdo it. Make sure you go straight for a good bit before trying to disengage.

Jack up both front wheels. Chock rears well and apply just a little power. Watch the fronts. Unless it's one of those rare birds that power the front wheels all the time that case, the opposite works.

With it off in park jack up the front, both wheels. In 2wd and N should spin, in 4 and 4 lo should not.

Make sure you're spinning the driveshaft, and not just the opposite tire backwards through the diff. For that matter I guess you could just jack up one wheel then let the diff handle sending it down the driveshaft to the t-case.

That's so much work though, I'd put the front wheels up against drive on ramps or a curb and the rear tires on dirt. If the rears spin, you're in 2. If you climb over the obstacle, you're in 4.

I don't know what you might see with one of those viscous coupling transfer cases, though.

Go to McDonalds and get a couple of food trays, put them behind the back wheels and back the vehicle onto them, set parking brake, put in 4wd, drive it like you stole it!
